. SAMUEL'MOORE, OF VILMINGTON, DELAW'ARE.
STREETDSWEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,113, dated August 16, 1898.
Application filed March l 2 1 8 9 8.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Sweepers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to street-sweepers, and more particularly to that class of sweepers adapted to be operated by hand in contradistinction to those operated by horsepower.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of this class which shall be simple ofl construction, durable in use, inexpensive of production, and by means of which the dirt and other foreign matter may be removed from the street and deposited in a box at the rear end of the sweeperlwithout creating a dust, and said box being removable may be emptied directly into a cart or other vehicle.
With these objects'in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully describedand claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved streetsweeping machine, the cover being removed to more clearly illustrate my invention; and Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectional view.
In said drawings, l denotes the frame of the machine, mounted at its rear end on wheels 2 and at its front end on traction-wheels 3,' having internal racks 4.
5 denotes the inclined bottom, which is secured to the frame of the machine and has side pieces 6.
7 denotes a cover, and'8 a box, arranged at the rear end of the machine, under the bottom, and removably supported upon cross-bars 9, connecting the side pieces of the frame of the machine. s
10 denotes asweeper which consists of a` shaft 11, provided with hubs 12, having radially-projecting arms 13. Thewheels 3 are fixed to the ends of this shaft 11, which is Serial No. 673,630. (No model.)
j ournaled in the hanger-brackets 1li, secured 5o to the forward end of the machine. Brushes 14 are attached to theouter ends of the arms 13. The free ends of the brush-shafts are provided with pinions that engage the internal racks of the forward supporting-wheels, thus giving to the brushes a rotary motion. As the brushes revolve they sweep the dirt and other foreign matter into the forward end of the machine over the flexible strip 15 onto the inclined bottom, from whence the dirt is removed and conducted to the box at the rear end of the machine bythe endless scraper 16. This scraper consists of flexible bands 17, mounted upon rollers 18 and 19, the former being journaled in the sides of the bottom near its forward end and the latter being fixed to the shaft of the rear driving-wheels. To these straps are secured angular metallic strips 20, provided with iiexible scrapers 21, that scrape against the inclined bottom and draw or drag the dirt into the box at the rear of the machine.
22 denotesthe handle for pushing the machine along, and 23' a cover hinged. to the main cover and adapted to fit over the removable box.
In operation, as the machine is pushed along, the sweeper will revolve and will sweep all the dirt and foreign matter from the street onto the inclinedbottom. From thence the dirt will be taken by the Scrapers to the box at the rear end of the machine. After the box has been iilled it may be removed and emptied into a cart or other vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. In a street-sweeping machine, the combination with the main supporting-frame, wheels journaled at the rear end of, said frame yand provided with a roller-axle, drive-wheels journaled at the fore end of the frame, a body supported by said frame comprisingwan inclined bottom and side pieces, a roller journaled between said side piecesattheirfor- ,ward ends, a rotarybrushvjournaledat the forward end of the body and gearedwith the drive-wheels, an endless conveyer supported on said rollers and provided Wit-h exble my hand in presence of two subscribing Witserapers adapted to scrape the inclined botnesses.
tom a removable boX supported by the main fralne at the rear and below the inclined bot- SAMUEL MOORE' 5 tom, and covers for the body of said box, sub- Witnesses:
MILTON H. I-IAWKINS,
stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set WILLIAM P. WINDISH.
