UNDERGARMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,173, dated June 2, 1896. Application filed September 13, 1895. Serial No. 562,419. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ENNIE LEONORA NIS- BE'I', of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Undergarments,

of which the following, taken in connection of the class described for use by nursing mothers during the period of confinement. The abdominal supporter may also be used by corpulent people.

I have found by experience that abdominal supporters are expensive. They are also awkward to keep in place when not combined with the undergarment; and to the end of facilitating their manufacture and eheapening the cost my invention consists in the several new and novel features and combination of parts hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying draw: ings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a garment provided with the abdominal supporter. Fig. 2 is a similar View of a knit undergarment provided with an abdominal supporter somewhat modified in form and also showing openings for the breast. Fig. 3 shows an enlarged View of the breast opening with the outer lap thrown back. Fig. 4.- is a sectional View across the garment through the breast-opening and showing the laps raised in dotted lines.

A represents an undergarment of any suitable construction, and which has the bands at of a different material from the body of the shirt, and which will not stretch and which bands extend across its lower front portion where it comes in contact with the stomach. These bands are preferably made widest at their centers, so as to afford the greatest possible support for the stomach at that point where it needs the support the most. Where two of the bands are used, as shown in Fig. 1, they are separated at their ends by the dart-shaped portions a of material of which the shirt is made, and this material being more elastic than the bands a allows the garment to adapt itself to the fullness of the stomach and affords an easy support therefor. To the ends of these bands and to the material ofwhich the shirt is made are secured the wide bands 13, which have the belts or fastening devices I) secured to their ends. By fastening these belts together behind the back any desired degree of compression or support can be given to the stomach.

Any desired number of the bands may be used upon a garment, and the large bands B maybe arranged so as to be secured together upon the side rather than upon the rear, if so preferred.

\Vhere the garment is intended for mothers, breast-openings O are made, and these openings are covered over on the outside of the garment by the flaps d, which are sewed to the garment at one edge only and which can be opened outward, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4E. Secured to the opposite edge of the opening 0, on the inner side of the garment, is a second flap 0', and sewed to the central portion of this flap c is a perforated disk 0 which is sewed to the flap c at its side and bottom edge only, leaving the upper edge free to have cotton or absorbent material 0 inserted between the disk and the flap c, as shown. Through the opening in the disk the nipple of the breast is passed, and the absorbent material absorbs any leakage that may occur from the breast. The two flaps cl 0 being secured to opposite edges of the breast-openings C, they can be opened outward in opposite directions, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- 1.1 An undergarment, combined with a band of a different material from the body of the shirt, and which is secured to the garment across its front, and the bands B secured to the ends of the band a and provided with the fastening devices, substantially as shown.

2. An undergarment provided with a breastopening, combined with the flap (1 for covering over the opening on the outside of the garment, the flap 0' on the inner side of the opening, and the perforated disk secured to the flap 0, substantially as described.
