Description
UNTTED STATES y PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN WHEELER, OF ATHOIJ, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED KNIFE-POLISHER AND KNIFE AND SCISSORS SHARPENER.
To alt whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN WHEELER, of Athol, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a ne'w and useful Improvement in Combined Knife-Polisher and Knife and Scissors Sharpener 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spccication, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved machine, taken through the'line x Fig. 2'. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the cutters for sharpening knives. Fig. t is a detail view of the cutter for sharpening scissors.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a combined instrument for polishing case-knives or knives having thin blades, for sharpening knives, and for sharpening scissors and it consists of a machine formed by combining a pair of emery-wheels for polishing the knives, a pair of tem pered-steel cutters for sharpening v them, and a temperedsteel cutter for sharpening scissor-blades with each other and with a shaft and spring for operating them, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the platform or foundation of the machine, which should be large enough to furnish a sufficient support to the machine. This platform A should be secured to a table or bench by screws or in any other convenient manner.
B and C are two standards attached to the platform A, one at each end, as shown in Fig. l. In bearings in the tops of these posts revolves a shaft, D. This shaft D is square, and to one of its ends is attached the crank E, by means of which the machine is operated.
F and G are a pair of emery-wheels,through the centers of which are formed square holes, into which the shaft D lits. The edges of the sides of these Wheels that come together are slightly beveled, as shown in Fig. 1, to faciliy Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,404, dated June 5, 1866.
tate the introduction ofthe knives that are to be polished.
H and I are two small wheels of tempered steel, through the centers of which are formed square holes, through which passes the square shaft D. The faces of these two wheels that are toward each other have cutting-edges formed upon them, as shown in Figs.2 and 3, and the said faces are beveled, as shown in Fig. l, so as to give the proper bevel to the knife-edge when sharpened.
Jis a small wheel, made and attached to the shaft D in the same manner as the wheels H and I. The face of the cutterJ isfurnished with cuttin g-ed ges in the samemanner as the w heels I-I and I, and there is given to the face such a bevel as will give the proper bevel to the edges of the scissor-blades when sharpened. The wheel J may be set closeup to the wheel I or they may be separated by a washer, K, as shown in Fig. l. f
Y'L is a washer placed between the wheel J and the pin M, which keeps the wheels in place upon the shaft.l
The wheels are all pressed together and pressed up against the pin M by the action of the spring N, one end of which rests against the wheel F and the other end against the pin O, which passes through the shaft D,.as shown. When the knife to be polished is inserted between the wheels F and Gr the springN is compressed, and its elasticity keeps the emerywheels pressed close against the blade of the knife, which is thus polished quickly and thoroughly by a few turns of the crank E.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved combined knife-polisher and knife and scissors Sharpener, formed by combining the emery-wheels F and G and tempered-steel cutters H, I, and J with each other and with the shaft D and spring N, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
JONATHAN WHEELER. Witnesses: l
