Description

(No Model.) y I Wl B.A LY' l No. 522,994, SKATE Egg? Patente d Jul UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. LYNCH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SKATE-PLAN E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,994, dated July 17, 1894. Application iiledfebruary 5, 1394. Serial No.4=99,200. (No model.)
To all whom #may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM B. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Skate- Planes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to skate planes, and has for its object to provide simple and effective means for sharpening skate runners in a true and regular manner.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skate plane, embodying the invention, and shown applied to a runner. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the file employed in this invention. Fig. 4. is a central transverse sectional view of the improved device.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the plane, which is provided with suitable rearwardly extending head 2 to form a convenient grip in using the device. The back of the plane is so shaped as will make it convenient in gaging the same, and depending from the said back on opposite sides are flanges 3 inclosing an open space to which access may be had at the bottom, and in the rear is a cross web 4 1n wh1ch is seated a clamping screw 5. Within the said space is removably and reversibly mounted a file 6 having a round edge and a square or plane edge 8, in order that either gutters or plane surfaces may be operated upon. The heel of the le 1s made angular as at 9, or of other suitable form 1n order to assist in retaining it within the body of the plane and when positioned it is held at the front end against movement by the clamping screw heretofore set forth. In the lower portion of the iiange on either one sIde or the other is an opening. 10 to receive a screw or a gage to adjust or adapt the device for any size of skate.
Across the front of the body of the plane, is atransverse rest bar 11 between which and the front depending wall of the said body is formed an opening for the reception of the front end of the iile, it being seen that the said front end of the file is beveled and forced between the two parts mentioned when the screw 5 is clamped against the heel of the file.
The great advantage of this device is that full control of the file is had and that either a concave or straight surface can be operated upon by the same with a great deal more mechanical nicety and trueness than can ordinarily be done by means of a grinding stone.
It will be understood that many minor changes in the construction, form and minor details of the parts might be made and substituted for those shown and described without departing in the least from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a skate plane, the combination of a body open at the lower front end and having a rearwardly extending head with a rear cross web, a reversible iile mounted in said body and having a straight and a convex edge, a transverse rest bar at the front of the body and a thumb screw engaging the said web and the back of said iile, the front end of the said file being forced against the said rest bar substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. A skate plane comprising a body having depending iianges and a rear cross web, a rearwardly extending head attached to said web, the lower portion of the flange of the body on eitherone side or the other being provided with an opening to receive a screw or gage, a reversible iile mounted in said body, a transverse rest bar at the front of the body and a thumb screw mounted in the said web and bearing against said Iile, the front end of said file being forced against the said rest bar substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM B. LYNCH.
Witnesses JAMES GARLAND, Gus SPIIORDING.
