Description

Erica@ EZEKIEL M. BARTLETT, OF LOUISIANA, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPECULA FOR UTERINE DISEASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,0111, dated January 16, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZEKIEL M. BARTLETT, of Louisiana, in the county ot' Pike and State of Missouri, have invented anew, useful, and Improved Speculuui to Facilitate the Treatment of Uterine and other Diseases 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, wherein similar letters refer to similar parts. 4
The instrument ma-y be made of German silver or other material. I
Figure l represents the instrument with its valves closed. Fig. 2 represents them expanded. Fig. 3 represents the interior plunger.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a band or collar, to the upper edge of which is hinged a series of valves, a. B is an inner band or collar, hinged at one side to the bottom edge of band or collar A, and fitting inside thereof. To the bottom of A there are attached two set-screws, b, which pass through the lower edge of B, by which the instrument is operated.
The operation is a follows When readyfor use the instrument is closed, as seen in Fig. l, with the plunger inside. In operating the instrument the inner collar, B,is pressed up on the inside of the valves a by means of the setscrews b, by which means they can be uniformly expanded to any desired extent, and there held, as shown in Fig. 2.
To lessen the size of the instrument, which is often desirable, any number of the valves a may be turned over, as shown in red lines in Fig. 2 at a--say each alternate valve, or more, as the case may require.
The instrument is so simple, and its mode of operation so obvious to those skilled in the profession, that a minute description of its delicate mode of operation is quite unnecessary.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The series of valves a., so hinged to the outer band or collar, A, that they may be contracted and expanded at pleasure, al1 acting together, or any number of them turned over and the remainder only used.
2. The bands or collars A and B, hinged together, as represented, and operated by the setscrews b, so as either to allow the contraction of the valves, or gently to expand them to any required extent, at pleasure.
3. The combination of the plunger, valves, bands or collars, hinges, and set-screws, for the purposes intended, and operating as set forth.
EZEKIEL M. BARTLETT.
