UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ROSE MARY SHELLEY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO RICHARD STAPLEY, WILLIAM SMITH, AND HENRY SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINATION-GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,229, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed May 22, 1893. Serial No. 475,148. (No model.) Patented in England August 19, 1891. No. 14,016.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RosE MARY SHELLEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination- Garments, (for which I have obtained a pat ent in Great Britain, No. 14,016, bearing date August 19, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combination garments, and the like, such as are used for female wear, and it consists in certain improvements in such garments as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a front new of a combination garment provided with my improvement, parts being broken away to better illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same garment provided with my said 1mprovement.
In garments of this nature, 1t is usual to have the crotch open, and my invention is intended to provide a pair of aprons, the one in front and the other behind, so attached to the inside of the garment that they will close this opening, or nearly close it, and render the garment more comfortable and otherwise more agreeable to the wearer.
Y A represents the front apron, and B represents the back apron; these aprons are attached to the inside of the front and back respectively of the garment at approximately the waist line or slightly below it, as shown at G by dotted lines in the drawings. These aprons may be of the same material as the garment,or of any other suitable material, and they may be either sewed in or they may be woven in with the garment, as desired. The crotch of the garment is open from a point slightly below the waist line in front to approximately the waist line at the back, as is usual with this class of garments, and the rear of the leg portions lap over each other over the hips, as shown in Fig. 2. The inside of the legs of the garment are open down to a point slightly below the crotch, as indicated at D in the figures, so that the aprons may hang smoothly. The front apron A is shown as being shorter than the back one, but they may both be of the same length if desired. These two aprons, the one in front and the other behind, hang down on the inside of the garment and close or verymearly close the openingin the crotch, as will be seen, thus adding to the comfort of the wearer, and
likewise improving the appearance of the garment. These aprons may be raised very readily by the wearer whenever it is desired to do so, and they will hang smoothly and neatly when lowered.
While I have shown my invention as applied to a combination garment, it will be seen that it may be applied just as well to an ordinary pair of drawers for female wear.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a garment of the character described, the combination of the garment having an opening in the crotch, with the apron A having its upper edge attached to the inside of the front of said garment at or near the waist line, and the apron B similarly attached to the inside of the back of said garment, the said aprons adapted to hang down and to very nearly close the said opening in the crotch of the said garment, substantially as and for the purposes described.
