To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, SAMUEL HERBERT Voon- BEES, of Delaware, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Suspenders, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of suspenders which are adapted to support diapers, stockings, drawers and similar articles of clothing on the bodies of infants, small children and women, and the object of my invention is to produce a cheap, simple, and easily applied device, bymeans of which the said articles of clothing may be suspended from the shoulders so as to avoid all the injurious effects attendant upon supporting the said articles from the waist; also to construct the device so that the clothing will be always held in proper position, thus avoiding anyexposure of delicate parts of the body; and further, to construct and arrange the parts of the suspenders in such a way that the movements of the body will be in nowise restricted.

To these ends, my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.

Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of the suspenders to the body of a child and to the clothing on the child; and Fig. 2 is a broken detail view of the suspenders.

The device is provided with shoulder straps 10, which may be made of any suitable material, although the shoulder straps and the entire device are preferably made of material possessing a certain amount of elasticity, to provide for easy movement of the body. The shoulder straps 10 converge at the back and are connected together by a cross brace 11, which acts as a shoulder brace and prevents the straps from separating and falling down over the arms, and the straps are crossed, as

provided with safety pins 13, or equivalent fastening devices to enable them to be secured to the clothing of the child, and behind the pins are flaps or shields 13 to protect the skin from injury by the pins.

The front endsof the shoulder straps 10 terminate in loops which are adjusted in the usual way as to length by means of the buckles 15, these being of any suitable construction, and the loops of the straps carry keepers 14, which are preferably of metal. The shoulder straps are provided with extensible lower ends formed by the two straps 16, which converge at their lower ends and are united and reinforced, as shown at 17, and the united ends of the straps carry a safety pin 18 or equivalent fastening, which is adapted to be secured to the clothing of the child, and the pin has at its back a shield 19, which is secured to the straps 16, and prevents the pin from coming into injurious contact with the body of the child.

The upper ends of the straps 16 are passed through and stitched in the keepers 14, and the free ends of the straps bend over so as to place the loops 2O horizontal with the shoul ders, and in the middle line of the leg carry metal loops 20, in-which are suspended the leg straps 21, which extend downward, are adjustable as to length by means of the usual adjusting buckles 22, and carry at their lower ends safety pins 23, or other suitable fastenings, which are adapted to be secured to the tops of the stockings 24.

The application of the device to a child wearing stockings and a diaper, is shown in Fig. 1. The shoulder straps 10 are placed upon the shoulders of the child. The pins 13 are fastened to the back portion of the diaper having flaps that pass underneath preventing chafing and taking the line of support away from the crotch and placing it over the but tocks. The pin 18 is fastened to the front portion at the center and top, or waist line, and the pins 23 are secured to the stockings and fold of diaper that passes between the legs and is fastened by the diaper 18, around the leg where the stocking joins. This arrangement holds both the diaper and stockings in their proper positions, and it enables the body to move freely, for when the body is bent, the freedom of movement is facilitated by the elasticity of the straps. It also causes the legs to be completely covered and protected.

My object being to protect or shield the body from irritation or abrasion by the different parts of the device I arrange the shield or flaps as heretofore described and shown and in addition to this the meeting ends of the two continuations 16instead of being placed one on top of the other, thus making a double thickness hereare placed edge to edge, and thus secured by the reinforce 17. This makes a thin flat connection and together with the broad flap 19 it serves to present a broad smooth bearing surface and prevents abrasion, irritation or annoyance of any kind.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. Asuspender consisting of the shoulder straps 10, having the keepers let at their front ends, the straps 16 converging and secured together at their lower ends, the attaching device at the said lower connected ends, said straps 16 having prolongations passing through the keepers 14 and extending down therefrom, and the stocking sn pporting straps secured to the lower ends of the downward prolongations of the straps 16, substantially as described.

2. A suspender consisting of the shoulder straps having the keepers 141 at their lower ends, the straps 16 converging at their lower ends and having an attaching device, said straps having prolongations passing through the keepers, secured thereto, and extending downward therefrom, the stocking supporting straps secured to the lower ends of said prolongations, the adjusting buckle 15 on the shoulder straps above the keepers 14 and the adjusting buckles on the stocking supporting straps, substantially as described.

3. A su'spender consisting of the shoulder straps having attaching devices at their lower rear ends, the converging straps 16 secured to the front ends of the shoulder straps and having their meeting lower ends placed edge to edge and secured together by a piece 17, the attachingdevice at the lower ends of the straps l6 and the protecting flaps 19 48 arranged back of the attaching devices, substantially as described.
