WATER-STILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent NO. 478,458, dated July 5, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHANNES PErrEnsorry and LOUIS H. LIEBECK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Water-Still, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in water-stills and condensing apparatus; and its object is to produce asimple apparatus by means of which a large and continuous supply of water may be distilled and rendered absolutely pure, so as to adapt it for either drinking or medicinal purposes.
To this end our invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a detail sectional elevation of the entire apparatus.
The apparatus is provided with a receiving and cooling tank 10, which may be held on any convenient support, such as 1l, and which has an inlet-pipe 12 near the bottom, the pipe being controlled by a cock and adapted to connect with any suitable source of watersupply. Opening from the tank near the top is a discharge-pipe 13, which leads to the lower portion 14 of a filter 15, and the filter comprises an open-toppedcase in which is held near the bottom a filtering-bed 16, this being preferably of powdered glass, which is contained between two parallel and horizontal perforated plates 17.
At one end of the filter is a swinging elbowpipe 15a, which opens from the middle portion of the filter, and when turned up, as indicated by dotted lines in the drawing, the'r open end of the pipe will extend to a point opposite the top of the filter, and when turned down it will be beneath the filter-top, as shown in the drawing, and the water may run freely through it. The object of the pipe is to facilitate the starting and cleaning of the filter. The short leg of the elbow-pipe is closed, and consequently when the pipe is turned up the filter 15 will fill with water, thus bringing the water-level above the bend 2O in the pipe 19, so that the water will fiow freely through; but after it is once started the water will have a siphon action and will continue to flow, and
tom, from the middle portion of which opens a cock-controlled vent=pipe 18, by means of which the filter may be cleaned. A dischargepipe 19 opens from the filter-case above the bed 16, the pipe having an upward bend 2O therein, which extends to a point about level with the top of the filter, and consequently the water will necessarily rise to the top of the` filter before it flows through the pipe 19, and only clear water will be allowed to fiow through thepipe.
The pipe 19 extends into the steam-dome 2l of a boiler 22 and is formed into a coil 23 in the upper portion of the dome, and this coil serves as a feed-water heater. After leaving the coil 23 the pipe emerges at the side of the dome, as shown at 24, extends downward to a point adjacent to the bottom of the dome, and is then bent 'upward and arranged to de liver, as shown at 25, within the dome and near the center of the same. The boiler 22 may be of any approved shape, but it is preferably cylindrical, and the steam-dome 21 is fastened securely in the upper part of thc Saville.
W'ithin the steam-dome and beneath the inlet 25 is a series of annular and convex plates 26, which are arranged one above the other and which have short vertical annular anges or pipes near the middle, the flange or pipe 27L of the upper plate being elongated to eX- tend upward to a similar series of plates in the upper portion of the dome, the plates being arranged, as shown in the drawing, in groups in the upper and lower portions of the steam-dome. The plates 26 are of less diameter than the steam-dome and they deliver upon concave plates 28, which are secured to the sides of the dome and have central apertures which encircle the short pipes or flanges 27 of the plates 26. The water within will flow downward and outward over the plates 26, inward over the plates 28, and will finally be delivered to the lower portion of the boiler,

The boiler is provided near its lower portion-that is, below the center-with try-cocks t 29 and 30, and in the bottom of the boiler is a steam-coil 31, by means of which the waterY is heated, the coil having thecock-controlled inlet 32 and a suitable outlet 33. The boiler has a discharge-pipe 34 opening from its lower portion, this being controlled by a cock 35,
and a pipe 36'eXtends ivertically upward `between the cock 35 andthe boiler, the pipe 36 terminating at its upper end in a glass case 37,which has a vent-.pipe 38 opening into the air vand aldischargepipe 39 leading back to the =pipe 34. The vcase 37 is at about the. proper level ot' water `in the boiler, and by means of it the vheight of thewater may be` observed.

'Theiilter-casehas afhook 44y within it to facilitate its handling, and opening from the rbottom of the filter are-pipes 44a' and 45w`nich extend downward into the wa-L ter-.filter and deliver, respectively, above and below the lter-bed lthereof. This construction enables any ofthe condensedsteamin the steam-filter to escape `into the .water-filter, Vso that only Athe `pure white steam will pass through the `steam-lter and into lthe discharge-pipe46,whichopens therefrom. This pipe 46 delivers into `afcondensing-cylinder 47.which is held longitudinally within the` vcooling-tank 10. The cylinder 47 has a large central bore 48, which isopen atthe bottom,` andthe water-containing*surface of the cyl- `inder is thus reduced to a thin annular cham- -ber 49, so that the steam which enters the cylinder will be exposed to a large cooling-y surface both without and within and will be quickly condensed.
Alit'hin the water-holdingchamber 49 is a coilof small pipe 50, whichis adapted to contain cold water to hasten condensation, this coil having a cock-controlled inlet 51 at the bottom and adischarge 52 at thetop, the coilldischarginginto the upper portion ofthe tank 10. The cylinder 47 hasatthe bottom va discharge-pipe 53, which has a vertical pipe I 54 connectingwith the air and which is bent` downward and then upwardrto connect with:
This arrangel a chamber 55the depending bend in the pipe having a cock-controlled vent 56. The chamber 55 has a cock-controlled vent 57 and a discharge-pipe 58, which leads to a suitable receiving-vessel 59. The discharge-pipe 58 is also connected with the air byavertical pipe 60, which facilitates a rapid iow ofl water.
lt will be seen bythe foregoing description that a continuous circulation of water may be maintained, the water entering at the inlet 12, passing through the tank 10, and from thence Athrough the `water-filter l5, and from thence through the heating-coil and into the boiler. The water Ais rapidly converted int steam and the steam is filtered and condensed, and iinally issues in the form of pure water through the xpipes 53 and 53 into rthe receiver 59.
Having thus :fullydescribedlour invention, we claim as -new and/desire tosecure by Letters 'Patent- 1. An apparatus of the character described, comprising ,a watertank `connected with a source of .water-supply, a-ilter connected with vthe tank, a boiler having a steam-dome therein and having a vpipe connection with the filter, a steam-filter connected with the steam-dome,-andacooling-cylinderheldwithin i thetank, the cylinder having its upper end connected :with the steam-'filter andlitslower end providedwith a discharge-pipe, substantially as described.

steam-boiler having a stealn-dome-'thereima Vpipe leading-from the iilter throug'hand into the steam-dome, the pipe being formed linto acoil'within the dome, a steam-filter connected with the .stea1n-dorne,awater-cooling cylinder held within the tank and connected with the steam-iilter, and a discharge-pipe opening from the cooling-cylinder, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the water-receptacle 10, of `the cooling-cylinder 47 arranged thereim'thecylinder having a central bore open at one endand closed at the other, an inlet-pipe opening into one end of thecylinder, an outlet-pipe openingfrom the opposite end of thecylinder, and a cooling-coil held within the chamber which surrounds the bore of the cylinder, thecoil having a suitable inlet and outlet, substantially as described.
