`anniincetta-Torche SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,584, dated March 17', 1891. Application tiled April SO, 1890. Serial No. 350,058. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN IEA McGanrHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iammock-I-Iolders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in ro the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Figure l is a perspective View of this device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the device folded together.
t5 Fig. 4 is a detail in elevation showing how the legis held firmly extended by means of a key.
This device is designed to afford a portable Y and folding liammocleholclei, and the novzo elty consists in the construction of the several parts and their combination, and in the device as a whole, all as will be now more fully described, as well as pointed out in the claims,
In the accompanying' drawings, A denotes the ridge-pole, to which is hinged at ct on each side near each end the legs B, which when extended, as shown in the drawings, support the ridge-pole in such a manner that when 3o the hammock C is suspended from it the hammock can be gotten into easily, and is then free to swing. The stay-rods D, preferably of wire, are each pivoted to one leg and at the hooked opposite end are engaged 3 5 on a bolt or other projection h on the opposite leg, so that this rod shall then be in place on the legs abouta third of the distance from the ridge-pole. The braces E, extending from each side of the ridge-pole from near its cen- 4o ter in a slanting direction to the legs and each properly secured there at the ends at about one-fourth the distance from the top, serve to give additional strength to the device.
In order that the legs I3 may be securely held in the extended position, I use a key G, which lits into a seat formed by a slot aX in the side of the ridge-pole and another b in the upper end of the leg. lVhen the leg is extended, these slots coincide and form suit- 5o able opening to permit the insertion of the key G. rIhis key when so inserted will prevent to a large degree the strain on the hinge, which is of great advantage when a heavy weight is suspended from the ridge-pole.
The hammock is securely held in place by 5 5 rings c on each end, which lit on the ends of the ridge-pole. The bolts or pins a in each end of the ridge-pole may be placed at any convenient point in the ends of the ridge-pole according as it is desired to have the ham- 6o mock lower or higher.
When the holder is in position for use, it can be held in a fixed position on the ground by means of the pins F, which pass through the lower ends of the legs into the ground. The smooth part a2 of the ridge-pole in the center thereof will afford a convenient place for children to exercise, as on a horizontal bar. At such time the hammock or other cloth, if desired, could be tightly stretchedgon 7c the stay-rods so as to afford a safety apron for those exercising on the bar.
Ordinarily a cover or awning of some fancy pattern will be stretched over the ridge-pole when the hammock is occupied. This lawn- 7 5 ing may be secured in place in any vdesired way; or the entire frame may be enveloped in a cover so as to form a tent.
When the hammock or other cloth. is stretched on the stay-rods, a smooth and level 8o surface will be afforded for sleeping at night.
To fold the holder the hammock should. be removed, the stay-rods then unhooked at the ends, and one end of each brace separated frcmitsconnection. Theseveralpartscanthen be compactly folded together, as shown in the drawings.
By this invention is afforded a light, strong, compact, durable, and cheap device, and one in all respects most admirably adapted for 9o the uses for which it is intended.
Having now` described my invention, what I desire to claim, is-- l. The combination, in a hammock-holder, as described, of the ridge-pole A, provided with adjustable pins at its ends and having the central smooth part ai, the legs B, hinged to the ridge-pole, the wire stay-rods D, connecting the legs, and the braces E,'slanting from the ridge-pole to the legs, substantially roc.- as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the hammock-holder,
with adjustable pins or bolts d in each end, with the hammock C, having rings c at the ends adapted to lit upon the ends of the ridgepole, so as to hold the hammock at any desired height, all substantially as described.
as described, having its ridge-pole A provided l 3. In a hammoek-holder, the ridge-pole A, Witnesses: slotted at ax, combined with the legs B, slotted JOHN DUKE, at b and hinged to the ridge-pole7 and the Il. V. SAGE.
