C. F. CL'EMENTS.
CLAMP., 10.425,658. Patented Apr. 15, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
CALVIN F. OLEMENTS, OF DAYTON, MISSOURI.
- CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,658, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed September '7, 1889. Serial No. 323,241. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, CALVIN F. CLEMENTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Dayton, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to clamps; and among the objects in view are to provide an exceedingly simple, cheaply-constructed, and easily-operated clamp adapted to be thrown into and out of a locked or clamped position.
W'ith these general objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed outin the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of aclamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isa similar View, the same being open; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details in perspective of the three castings composing my invention.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
My invention comprises three parts namely, a base, a clamping-lever, and a combined operating and locking lever--these parts preferably being cast.
l represents the base, which is of a T shape when viewed in plan and comprises a central shank 2, terminating at one end in opposite perforated lugs 3 for the reception of screws separated by a longitudinal recess 4, the walls of which terminate at their rear in opposite perforated lugs 5. The opposite end of the shank of the base terminates in a transverse head or jaw 6, in this instance slightly concaved, and between the head and lugs the shank is provided with one or more screw-re ceiving openings 7.
S represent-s the clamping-lever, and the same comprises a central shank portion 9, having at its forward end a transverse head 10 agreeing in size with the head of the base, and in this instance slightly' conveXed to agree with the concavity of the opposite fixed jaw of the base. Such constructions of the jaws, however, may be varied to agree with the application to which the invention is put. The shank of the lever rests within the recess intermediate the securing-lugs, and by a pintle 1l is pivotally connected with the bearinglugs at the end of the base, and beyond the point of pivot the shank is extended and upwardly-curved, as at 15, that portion of the shank lying between the securing-lugs being iiush with the upper surfaces of the lugs.
12 represents a combined operating and locking lever, and at about the center of the same is formed an opening 13, through which is inserted a pivot-pin 14, the lower end of the pin terminating in the opening of one of the securing-lugs.
The clamp, as herein described and shown, is adapted for holding ropes, bed-clothin g, and other similar articles, and its operation is as follows: By swinging the outer end of the lever 12 toward the front the inner end of said lever rides over the upper edge of the clamp-lever and to the rear against the curved end thereof in rear of its point of pivot, so that the front end of the clamp-lever is raised and the clamp opened for the reception of any article desired to clamp. After the article has been placed between the jaws a reverse swinging of the lock-lever throws the inner end of the same over the shank of the clamping-lever in front of its pivot, closing the jaw thereof against the base or interposed object and locks the lever against opening.
It is apparent that the various parts of the device may be easily cast and assembled, requiring no hand-iinishing whatever.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with a base terminating at its front end in a jaw and at its opposite end in bearings and intermediate lugs vhaving a groove between the lugs, of aclamping-lever pivoted in the bearings and terminatin g at its front end in a head and at its rear end in an upwardly-curved portion, and a pivoted locking-lever adapted to be thrown to either side of the pivot-point of the clamping-lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the T-shaped base, consisting of a forward transverse jaw or head, sidesecuring-lugs, and an intermediate recess, the walls of which project to the rear of the IOO lugs to form bearing-lugs, of a lever mounted in the recess and pivoted in the bearing-lugs,
the shank of the clamping-lever being flush with the upper face of the securing-lugs and provided 'at its rear end with an upwardly curved portion and at its forward end in a transverse jaw, and a looking-lever pivotally connected with one of the securing-lugs and extending over the shank of the clamping lever and adapted to be swung so as to bear at either side of the same, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with abase and a pivoted c1amping-1ever upwardly curved at its rear end, of a lever pivoted to one side of the clamping-lever and adapted to be swung over against the upwardiycurved face of the clamping-lever and depress the rear end of the clamping-lever, substantially as specified.
`4f. The base terminatingin a head forming a rigid jaw of the clamp combined with the clamping-lever pivoted to the base and ter` with the curved portion to open it, as set forth:`
In testimony that` I claim the foregoing as 'my own I have hereto affixed my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
