SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming* part of Letters Patent No. 425,508, dated April 15, 1890.
Application Sled J une 6x 1889. Serial No. 313,287. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that we, JAMES P. HARRISON and JOHN L. WARING, citizens of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safes; and We do hereby declare thefollowing to be a-full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to whiclrit appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention'relates to certain new and useful improvements in safes, our object being to adapt such articles to use as depositories for valuables by others than those having the combinatiomthe invention consisting in providing safes with one or more suitable openings through which such valuables may be passed, and in providing suitable means for closing such opening.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, inWhich Figure 1 is a front view of a safe, partly broken away; and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same, also broken away.
In the drawings, A represents a safe of any Well-known or suitable construction, said safe being provided at any suitable points with one or more openings a, through which articles to be placed in the safe are inserted. On the inside of the safe, at a point below or above such opening, are arranged suitable bearings ZJ, in which is mounted a shaft c. To this shaft is secured a flap B, ar1'anged,when raised, to close the opening a.. Around shaft c is coiled a spring d, said spring' being so arranged as to force the flap against the safe and thereby close the opening.
Flap B may be provided with a lock, as e, a suitable key-hole being formed in the safe above the opening, this arrangement being provided to allow of the locking of the flap, if desired. In the drawings, a key C is shown. It will be understood, however, that this lock and key may be dispensed with, if desired, dependence being placed upon the spring to keep the opening closed. Vhen the lock is employed, however, each person entitled to the use of the safe as a depository will be provided4 with a key thereto.
These safes are' adapted to use as letterboxes or as general receptacles for valuables; but are specially designed for use in connection with the bank-deposit system described and claimed in the application of J. L. l/Varing, filed March 20, 1889, as amended in connection herewith. In the foregoing We have described our invention as consisting of a hinged iiap when used in connection with the other parts shown; but it Will be understood that a sliding door or strip might be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Vhen used as a means of making bank deposits, the safe shall be constructed with a double compartment, into one of which the envelope with the money is put, and into the other the depositor drops a check-receiptbearing his name, dto., so that one collector shall have access to the compartment containing the envelope and another shall have access to the compartment containing the receiptl check, and thus a perfect check on theft is secured.
l. The combination, with a safe provided with a drop-slot, of a spring-actuated closingstrip located upon the interior of said safe and provided with a suitable locking device operated from the exterior of the safe, asset forth.
The combination, with a safe provided with a series of drop-slots, of partitions dividing such safe into a series of compartments,-one compartment for each drop-slot, and each compartment provided with a separate combination-lock, as and for the purpose set forth.
In' testimony whereof We ailix oursignatures in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES I. HARRISON. JOHN L. IVARING.
