Description
S. CARPENTER.
Broom. Patented March 22; 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL CARPENTER, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
IMPROVED BROOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 4 L973, dated March 22, 18A.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL CARPENTER, of Cedar Rapids, Linn county, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to construct a fastening for the wisps and handle of a broom, so arranged that either may be renewed when worn or broken. To accomplish this object I make a broom in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents the metallic attachment by which the handle and wisps are held in their places. Fig. 2 represents the broom complete.
a a and b b are metallic braces, to which the handle of the broom, 0, is secured bysix screws, d dd 01 d d. e is one half of a metallic clasp, bent at right angles at both ends to inclose the sides of the broom-head. f is the other half of the clasp.- The braces a a and b b are fastened to the-clasp by four rivets, g g g g. Both parts of the clasp are perforated with four holes to admit of four screw-bolts with nuts h h h h. The wisps of broom-corn, i, are secured in their places between the two parts of the clasp e and fby tightening the nuts h h h h.
The advantages of my invention are as follows: When the broom-corn is worn it may be readily removed by unscrewing the nuts 9 g g g and loosening the clasp e f, and new substituted in its place 5 or, if the handle should become broken, a new one may be fastened to the braces a a, and b b by the screws 01 d d d (1 cl.
The handle and wisps are by my method firmly secured in their places, and the broom is more durable and less liable tocome to pieces than are those now generally in use.
I do not limit myself to the use of broomcorn in the construction of my broom, but can use any other suitable material.
I- do not claim as new the metallic clasps or screws which hold the wisps in place; but
I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the handle 0, the braces to a and b b, the clasps e and f, the screw-bolts and nuts g g g g, and the wisps i, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
SAMUEL GA RPENTER.
