ATTACHMENT FOR MINERS LAMPS.
No. 410,562. Patented Sept. 3, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VARREN C. ROCKTVELL, OF MOUNT CARMEL, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC GOLDSCHMIDT AND GEORGE B. RENN, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR MINERS LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,562, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed March 13, 1889. Serial No. 303,119. (No model.)
To all 1071,0122, it may concern: ties of the arms G outward in a slight curve, 50 Be it known thatl,\VARREN GROCKWELL as shown at H, and the said curved portions a citizen of the United States, residing at fit around the lower portions of the body of Mount Carmel, in the county of Northumberthe lamp, as shown in Fig. 2. The hook .l on land andState of Pennsylvania, have invented the lamp is passed through a central perforaa new and useful ImprovementinLamp-Holdtion in a rubber or leather block K, and the 55 ing Attachments for Miners Caps and Hats, said block is securedin position by the coiled of which the following is a specification. wire L, the ends of which form eyes or loops My invention relates to improvements in M, which engage the cross-bar or loop F, so as lamp-holding attachments for miners caps to form hinges, by which the said coiled wire and hats; and it consists in certain novel feawill be secured to the lamp-holding bracket. 60 tures, hereinafter described and claimed. The rubber or leather block K is protected In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is by a metallic shield or plate 0, which is sea perspective view of a cap, showing my atcured to the center of the coil and extends I5 tachment applied thereto and supporting the over the block. This plate 0 extends over lamp. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the atthe block K and protects the same against the 6 5 tachment removed from the cap. Fig. 3 is a flame, so as to prevent its being burned longitudinal section of the attachment. Fig. thereby.
4 is atransverse section on an enlarged scale. P designates a keeper secured to the front Referring to the drawings by letter, A desside of the leather plate and adapted to reignates a cap or hat of the usual or any preceive the picker N, which is used to trim the 70 ferred construction and provided with an orlamp. dinary visor B. From the foregoing description, taken in My attachment consists of a leather plate connection with the accompanying drawings,
C of suitable thickness to form a rigid supthe manner of using my device and the adport for the lamp and a proper size to extend vantages of the same will be readily under- 75 up the front side of the cap or hat and slightly stood. The plates 0 D are secured to the cap, over the top of the same. The upper end of and the lamp is then placed in position 011 the this plate is secured permanently to the cap, lamp-supporting bracket, when the device and its lower end is secured to the upper end will be ready for use. As the central perforaof a metallic plate D, and also to the side of tion in the block K becomes worn, the coils 80 the cap. The metallic plate D extends down of the wire L are compressed in rear of the the front side of the visor and has its front block, so as to force the same into a more comend secured thereto. This metallic plate pact form, and thereby diminish the size of serves to deflect the drippings from thelamp said perforation. The durability of the said and prevent the visor from becoming satublock is thus increased and the lamp effectu- 85 rated with the oil. ally held at all times so that it cannot swing.
E designates a wire bracket, which is sup- The hinged connection of the rubber or ported by the leather plate 0, and is adapted leather holding coils.to the lamp-supporting to hold the lamp. The bracket consists of a bracket enables the lamp to swing outward single wire bent at its center to form the crosswhen the miner stoops or bonds his head, so 9 bar or loop F and the arms G, extending thereas to prevent the oil running out through the from. The said arms G are passed through spout. The arms G should fit the lamp so as the plate C, and then downward in rear of the to prevent all lateral movement thereof, and
same to a point at about the center thereof, at the same time allow it to have sufiicient and are then bent forward and extended forward movement to accommodate itself to through the said leather plate to form the the position of the miners head and prevent lamp-supporting arms. Theselamp-supportloss of the oil. The coils which encircle the ing arms are formed by bending the extremirubber or leather block may be formed integral With the lamp-supporting bracket, if so desired, and it may sometimes be preferred to so construct it.
Having thus described my invention, WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In alamp-holding attachment for miners caps or hats, the combination, with the lampsupporting bracket carrying the coils L, of the block K, fitted in said coils and having the central perforation for the reception of the lamp-hook, as set forth.
2. In alamp-holding attachment for miners caps or hats, the combination, with the lampsupporting bracket and the coils L, of the block K, fitted in said coils and having a central perforation, and the plate 0, secured to the coil and extending over the said block, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the plate C, of the Wire bracket secured thereto, carrying the coils L and having the curvedportions H, and the block fitted in said coils, as set forth.
4. The improved lamp-holding attachment for miners caps or hats, consisting of the leather plate 0, the metallic plate D, secured to the lower end thereof, the keeper 1, secured on the front side of the plate 0, the lampholding bracket secured to said plate and carrying the coils L, and the elastic block fitted in said coils, as set forth.
5. The combination of the lamp-holding bracket, the coils hinged thereto, and the elastic block fitted in the coils, as set forth.
6. The combination of the bracket and the swinging elastic block supported thereby, as set fort-h.
7. In a lamp-holding attachment, the plate 0, the bracket E, secured thereto and having its lower end bent to form clamping-arms G for the lamp, and the block K, attached to the upper end of the bracket E and provided with a perforation for the passage of the hook of the lamp, as set forth.
8. In a lamp-holding attachment, the plate 0, attached to the miners hat or cap, the block K, hinged to the plate 0 to receive the lamp-hook, and the clamping-arms G for the lamp, as set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WARREN O. ROCKWELL.
