Description
W. G. FROST. WIRE STRETGHER.
' (No Model.)
No. 406,642. Patented July 9, 1889.

ATTORNEYS.
W/f/vEssEs;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAlW G. FROST, OF LEBANON, INDIANA.
WIVRE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,642, dated July 9, 1889.
Application filed October 8, 1888. Serial No.287,09 7. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM G. Fnos'r, of Lebanon, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved ire-Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to wire-stretchers, and has for its object to provide a wire stretcher which will be eifec tive in use and may be made a permanent fixture with a wire fence.
The invention consists in a wire-stretcher constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is aview of a wire fence with wirestretohers applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the wire-stretcher on the line z .2, Fig. 3, with the ends of a fence-wire broken away; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the Wire-stretcher, with the ends of a fence-wirebroken away.
The wire-stretcher consists of a frame 1, preferably of metal and formed with the horizontal portion 2, having an eye or hole 3 at one end, to which is secured an end of a fence-wire 4, passed through the eye 3 and twisted upon the wire 4:. The other end of the horizontal portion 2 is provided with two vertical side pieces 5, in which is mounted the axle 6 of a grooved wheel or pulley 7. The latter is formed with a transverse hole 8, through which passes the end of a fencewire 5, which is secured to the pulley 7 by bending it about the same.
The ends of the axle 6 rest in inclined slots 9 in the side pieces 5, so that the pulley may be readily lifted out of the side pieces 5, when desired. The pulley 7 is provided at one end with a ratchet-wheel 10, with which a pawl 11 on one of the side pieces engages. The axle 6 is formed with a squared end 12, with which a crank may be engaged. By this means the pulley may be turned and held in position by the pawl ll engaging ratchetwheel 10 when the fence-wire has been drawn taut.
:steady the wire-stretcher, it is formed porarily employed to stretch the end of a wire, and then detached, the wire being secured in any suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is
1. A wire-stretcher consisting of a horizontal frame with means at one end for securing the end of a fence-wire, and a pulley or wheel at the other end with a pawl-and-ratchet wheel and means for operating the same, and lateral projections with means for securing brace-wires thereto, substantially as described.
2. A wire-stretcher consisting of frame 1, with horizontal portion 2, having at one end eye 3, and at the other vertical side pieces 5,
' a pulley 7, with ratchet-wheel 10, having its axle 6 provided with squared end 12, mounted 'in inclined slots 9 in the side pieces 5, pawl 11, en gaging ratchet-wheel 10, and lateral proj ections 13, with holes 14., substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a wire-stretcher consisting of frame 1, with horizontal portion 2, having the eye 3 at one end and the vertical side pieces 5 at the other, pulley 7 and ratchet-wheel 10, having axle 6, with squared end 12, mounted in inclined slots 9 in said side pieces, pawl 11, engaging ratchetwheel 10, and lateral projections 13, with holes 14:, of the brace-wires 15, having their ends secured to projections 13, the horizontal fence-wire 4:, secured'to eye 3, and the fencewire 5, secured to pulley 7, substantially as as described.
