UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KNUD OLEMENTSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED MANG LlNG-MACHINE A ND EXTENS|ON-TABLE.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,935. dated March 27, 1888.
I Application filed May 17, 1887. Serial No. 238,526. (No model.)
To aIZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, KNUD CLEMENTSEN, a citizen of, the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mangling-Machine and Extension-Table,- andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in' the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved extension-table and mangle, showing the man- Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the table with the mangle folded down in the table; and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view on linemx, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to a combined mangling-machine and extension-table; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of an extensiontable having a mangle hinged in its frame in such a manner that it may be folded down in the frame and that the table may be used as a common extension-table, while it may be folded up and supported upright by the sliding portions of the top, the top of the table serving as a feed and receiving table for the articles to be mangled, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numerals 1 indicate the side rails of the supportingframe, and 2 are the end rails, the said rails being supported at the corners by the legs 3. The side rails are connected at their middles by a cross-piece, 4, having two suitable ears, 5, upon its outer side, and having two upwardlyprojecting studs, 6, upon its upper side, and the space between this cross-piece and the end piece is covered by a bottom, 7 forming a box or receptacle, into which various parts belonging to the-mangle and its fastenings may be placed, while at the other side the bottom of the frame is open, having, however, supporting-boards 8 secured in the corners. The top portions, 9, are provided with side rails, 10,
and end rails, 11, sliding uponthe outer sides of the frame, and the end rails have legs 12 secured to their middles, serving to support the top portions when they are drawn out, hinged leaves 13 being preferably secured to the outer edges of the top portions and sup-. ported by suitable braces, 14, upon the end rails.
The side rails of the top portion of one end of the table are provided with the extensionrails 15, and'the top portion of the other end is provided with similarrails,16,whi1e theside rails of the frame are provided with grooves l7,in which the extension-rails of the top portions are secured, the rails 15 of one end sliding between the side rails, 1, of the frame and the extension-rails 16 of the other end of the top portion of thetable.
Suitable extension-leaves,18,'may be placed between the top portions or top leaves in the usual manner, the said extension-leaves being kept when not in use under the top leaves in the usual manner.
The bottom piece, 19, of a mangle-frame, 20,"
At one side of the lower portion of the man-' gle is secured a cross'piece, 25, having its upper edge beveled upward toward the lower roller of the mangle, and the outer face of this cross-piece is formed with a groove, 26,in which the edge of the sliding top leaf may fit, supporting the mangle-frame, and a similarlyshaped detachable cross -piece, 27, is placed with suitable sockets,28,upon the studs of the cross-piece in the frame, and bears against the other side of the mangle-frame supporting the same. It will thus'be seen that when the mangle is folded up and the top leaves of the table are-drawn toward the cross-pieces at both sides of the mangle it will-be perfectly IOO supported in an upright position, and the articles to be mangled may be fed from one leaf and will be discharged upon the other leaf of the top of the table when the detachable crank is turned. It will also be seen that the man gle being folded down after sliding the top leaves apart and removing the detachable cross-piece it will rest within the frame, the detachable cross-piece and the crank being placed in the box of the frame, and the table may now be used like an ordinary extensiontable, there being no trace ofthe mangle visible.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a combined eXtension-table'aud mangle, the combination of the frame having a cross-piece, a bottom between the cross-piece and one end, supporting-boards near the other end of the frame, movable top portions upon the ends of the table, having supporting-legs and extensionrails, a mangle pivot-ally secured upon the side of thecrosspiece nearest the supporting-boards, and means, substantially as described, for securing the mangle in its upright or operative position.
2. In a combined extension-table and mangle, the combination of a frame having a crosspiece forming a box upon one side, asegmental groove in one of theside pieces of the frame, studs upon the top of the cross-piece, perforated ears upon the side, a removable crosspiece having sockets upon its under side, whereby it is secured upon the cross-piece of the frame, a mangle the bottom of which is provided with pintles pivotally secured upon the ears of the cross-piece of the frame,a crosspiece on one side of the lower end of the mangle, having a groove in its outer side,a handle movably secured upon one end of the shaft of one of the rollers of the mangle, and a top portion upon each end of the frame having a supporting-leg and extension-rails.
In testimony that I elai m the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KNUD OLEMENTSEN.
