SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.365,853, dated July 5, 1887.

Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. PALMER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Mis souri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Memorial Ornaments for Necklaces, te., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in Figure l is a perspective View of the neck lace with a View of a string and cluster of the memorial frames secured therein.- Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of one of the frames with a memorial portrait inclosed and eyeletsthereon for the attachments of the coupling-links. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a back View of the frame with the eyelets transposed to a horizontal position and part broken away to show the interior arrangement of the case. Fig.v 5 is a vertical side View of a sleeve-stud with the memorial device attached. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of a locket or watch-charm, showing a double case for holding two memorial pictures. Fig.
7 is a vertical side view of a brooch with the memorial device attached.
My invention relates to a memorial device for a necklace in which Ine/mentosof the wearers friends can be displayed in honor of their memory, and atthe same time form` an at'- tractive and interesting ornament; and my invention consists in features of novelty, here inafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, A represents my memorial frame. It` is provided with a metal back, B, and front crystal, D, which together inclosea memorial picture, G, (that may bea photograph, tintype, or any other portrait.) The back and crystal are coupled together and incased by a circular concave bead, C, that securely holds the parts of the case together. (See Fig. 1.)
When used in the form of a necklace, (see Fig. 1,) eyelets E are attached at suitable distances around the Vperiphery of the circular bead, and links or rings F, passingthrough the eyelets of adjacent frames, couple thern together. The links maybesplit ringsconstructed after the manner of key-rugs, or in any other suitable form that Wil l facilitate the attachment and detachment of the memorial frames. H represents a spring snap-clasp for the attach- Inent of the necklace behind. Then used in combination withsleeve-studs, (see Fig. 5,) a y similar frame to that already described, and which also incloses a memorial picture, has a stem, K, that carries a button-knob, L. When adapted to the form of a brooch, (see Fig. 7,) lugs M, secured to the back disk, have bearings M2 for the pivot-pin M which engages, when closed, in a clasp or hook, M; and, lastly,when constructed in the fornn of a locket or watch-charm, no back is required, but the case has a double face inclosing two pictures covered by two crystals, which are secured together by the concave clamping-beadbefore described, (see Fig-6,) an eyelet, E', being` provided whereby to suspend it.
The invention is intended to provide a Inemorial device that will make an attractive ornameut, and at the same time be an interesting memento of the wearers friends.
I claim as my iuvention- In memorial ornaments, the combination of the frames A, having metal backs B and crys/ tals D, coupled together with the circular concave beads O, and inclosing portraits G, the 8o framesarranged to be attached together in the form oia necklace by links F, that engage in eyelets E,\secured to the beads, with the snapclasp H, for fastening the necklace, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. i
