UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK H. BONI, OF ELVASTON, ILLINOIS.
CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,474, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed February 26, 1887. Serial No. 2%],016. (No model.)
To all whom, it may cmwern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. Bout, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elvaston, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will euable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7 Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section.
My invention relates to road-carts; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the axle, which is bent or curved upwardly between its journals, and.
is provided with the usual wooden stock, B, which is securely clipped thereto by clips in the usual manner.
O O are the vehicle wheels.
D is a circle or fifth-wheel which rests on are-plates E E, interposed between it and the stock 13, to prevent wear of the latter and to lessen the strain on the kingbolt F.
The lower half, G, of the elliptical spring is secured to the upper side of the head-block H by bolts or clips. On its lower face the head-block H is provided with a wear-plate,
I, which is let into a recess in said lower face The king-bolt F is provided at its middle with a fixed collar or enlargement, J, which, when the king-bolt is in place, rests upon the stock B,and also supports the head-block H and the parts connected therewith.
K L are angle-irons riveted to the upper and lower faces of the fifth-wheel in front of the stock, the arm M to the upper side and the arm N to the lower side of the fifth-wheel. The angle-iron N is made integral with and forms part of the spring P, which is connected to and forms the lower spring-support for the foot-basket Q.
R is the seat, which is secured to a seat-bar, S, the latter being bolted to the upper half, T, of the elliptical spring.
The foot-basket Q, is formed of slats U, se
cured to loop-hangersV V, secured through their arms \V to the upper and lower faces. of the bottom of the seat R by bolts.
Y Y are end springs, the rear ends, Z, of which curve upwardly and forwardly, and are secured to the lower face of the axle by' clips (1 (b. The end springs, Y Y, are provided with eyes or lugs b b on their shorter arms 0 c, to which the thill-irons d d are hinged by bolts passed through the aligned eyes of the springs Y Y and thethillironsd d. c e of the springs Y Y aresecured to thelower faces of the thill irons by bolts that pass through the thill-irous into the thills.
In this construction it will be observed that the seat and foot-basket are connected to the axle by springs that move independently of the thills; also, that the thills are hinged to the axle and supported by springs clipped to the axle and to the hinged thills, so that the thills have an up'and down spring motion 1ndependently of the axle seat and foot-basl et.
When the vehicle is drawn over the road, the cart, thills, and axle move sidewise wlth the horse, free and independently of the seat and foot-basket.
Having described this invention, what i clai 1n, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of the axle, the fifthwheel, head-block, elliptical spring, the shouldered king-bolt, the upper angle-iron, lower angle-iron on the middle spring, P, the footbasket connected to the seat by metal loops,
and connected also to the middle spring, the end springs, and the thills hinged to the shorter arms of the end springs and bolted to the longer arms of said springs, substantially as specified. I
2. The combination, with the axle,of the end springs clipped to the axle and provided with shorter arms having eyes thereon and longer arms curved upwardly and extending forwardly of the thills, hinged to the shorter arms of the end springs and bolted to the longer arms of said end springs, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK I-I. BONI.
