A41d 27/12; A41b 9/06 U.S. Cl. 2113 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a new and improved garment construction for ladies garments having a close fitting bodice and sleeves such as dress liners, slips, and blouses.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved garment construction for close fitting ladies garments such as undergarments which provides underarm protective shields.

Another object of the invention is to provide a garment construction for a close fitting ladies garment which permits free movement of the arms without binding.

A further object of the invention is to provide a garment construction suitable for use in close fitting undergarments to be Worn under ladies uniforms which provides underarm protection and which permits free movement of the arms without binding.

In order to accomplish this result the present invention contemplates providing in a garment having a close .fitting bodice and sleeves an elongated gusset extending along the underarm of each sleeve and part way down the sides of the bodice. The gusset is connected at seams along cutouts in the sleeve and bodice complementary in shape to the gusset. The gusset is formed to provide a flat pouch or envelope closed at the bodice end of the gusset and open near the sleeve end of the gusset for receiving a removable and replaceably absorbent, protective pad.

According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the gusset is formed of a first elongated piece of material extending continuously along the underarm of the sleeve and part way down the side of the bodice, connected at seams along cut-outs in the sleeve and bodice complementary in shape to the gusset. A second elongated piece of material overlies the first and is attached along the seams extending from the bodice end of the gusset. The second elongated piece of material terminates above the end of the sleeve and is left open to form a pouch between the first and second elongated pieces of material. A third piece of material overlies the first piece of material and extends from the end of the sleeve, terminating above the sleeve with a slight overlap of the second piece of material. The end of the third piece of material overlying the second piece of material is left open to provide an overlapping lip over the opening in the pouch or envelope for securely retaining a protective, absorbent pad within the pouch or envelope.

In the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in FIGURE 1 there is shown a dress liner 10 formed by a close fitting bodice 11 and close fitting sleeves 12. Extending continuously along the underarm of each sleeve and part way down the sides of the bodice, there is a gusset 13 connected at seams 14 along cut-outs in the sleeve and bodice complementary in shape to the gusset.

Referring more particularly to the garment and sleeve construction, as illustrated in FIGURE 2, it is seen that the gusset 13 is of flat, elongated shape rounded at the bodice end 15 of the gusset and extending at its other end to the end 16 of sleeve 12. Referring jointly to FIG- URES 2 and 3, the gusset is formed by a first flat elongated piece of material 23 connected to the sleeve 12 and bodice 11 along the seams 14 formed along the edge of a cut-out in the sleeve and bodice complementary in shape to the shape of the gusset. Overlying the first elongated piece of material 23, a second fiat, elongated piece of material 21 extends from the bodice end 15 of the gusset to a line 22 terminating before the end 16 of sleeve 12. The end of the second piece of material 21 along line 22 is left open. A third flat piece of material 20 extends from the end 16 of sleeve 12 to a line 24 above the sleeve slightly overlapping the second piece of material 21 to form a lip 25 over the opening along line 22. The third piece of material 20 is connected along the seam 14 and is also connected to the sleeve 12 along the end 16. The third piece of material 20 is, however, left open along the line 24 so that the lip 25 overlies an opening to the pouch or envelope formed by the first and second pieces of material. A protective, absorbent pad 26 may then be retained Within the pouch or envelope formed by the gusset. The pad 26 will be securely retained without loss because of the overlapping lip 25 formed by the third piece of material 20.

Because the gusset extends continuously from the end 16 of sleeve 12 partly down the side of bodice 11, and is formed by fiat pieces of material, the gusset provides a non-binding joint between the sleeve 12 and bodice 11 for free movement of the arms. The gusset itself is a pouch or envelope for receiving the absorbent, protective pad which is removable and replaceable. It is apparent that the gusset may be constructed to form a variety of pouches or envelopes without departing from the scope of the following claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A garment construction for a ladies garment having a bodice and sleeves fitted close to the body comprising: an elongated gusset formed of a first elongated piece of material extending continuously along the underarm of the sleeve and part way down the side of the bodice, said sleeve and bodice formed with cut-outs complementary in shape to the gusset, said first piece of material connected along seams along said cut-outs, and a second elongated piece of material overlying the first and attached along said seams extending from the bodice end of the gusset and open near the sleeve end to form a pouch between said first and second elongated pieces of material.
