Description

Dec. 17, 1968 D. M.ALMASY CORNER CLIP FOR USE WITH PACKAGE STRAPPING F5iled July 25. 1967 I INVENTOR. DAVID M. ALMASY BY WW /..-"l' 'Amv ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,416,652 CORNER CLIP FOR USE WITH PACKAGE STRAPPING David M. Almasy, 2233 N. Hubbard Road, Hubbard, Ohio 44425 Filed July 25, 1967, Ser. No. 655,897 4 Claims. (Cl. 206-60) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rigid corner clip having two planar sections disposed at a 90 angle with a laminated cushioning liner material.
This invention relates to a corner clip such as used in packaging various sheet materials, and the like, through the use of strapping or banding. The principal object of the invention is the provision of a corner clip that will protect package materials from the adverse effects of the strapping or banding positioned thereabout.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an inexpensive cushioned corner clip comprising a metal angular shape and a cardboard liner adhered thereto.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a corner clip that may be formed in continuous length and cut off to form inexpensive individual clips suitable for positioning beneath strapping or banding on a package or a stack of metal sheets, plates or the like.
The corner disclosed herein comprises an improvement in the art relating to packaging through the use of strapping or banding, whereby a plurality of articles are as sembled and held in a single unit by metallic or plastic bands or straps positioned thereabout and engaging the corners thereof. Heretofore corner clips have been employed on the corners or edges of the articles being banded or strapped together, and damage has resulted to the articles and particularly the edges thereof, by reason of the deformation thereof due to the pressure of the strap ping or band applied over the corner clip. The present invention provides an L-shaped corner clip with a cushioned liner such as corrugated cardboard, or the like, secured permanently thereto by a suitable adhesive, to form an integral unit. Such a corner clip positioned on the corner or edges of a group of articles which are subsequently banded or held by strapping which is tensioned, are protected against injury of the edges from the clip or the banding or strapping holding the same.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a cushioned corner clip formed in accordance with the invention.
'FIGURE 2 is a perspective view on a smaller scale showing a stack of superimposed flat sheet-like articles with corner clips applied thereto, and strapping positioned about the corner clips and tensioned and held.
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged cross-section on line 3-3 of FIGURE 1.
By referring to the drawing, and FIGURE 1 in particular, it will be seen that the cushioned corner clip comprises a rigid, angularly-shaped single piece member consisting of a pair of right angular planar sections and 11, and a similarly shaped, similarly sized cushioning member 12 adhered permanently thereto by a suitable adhesive 13. The cushion element may comprise corrugated cardboard or soft laminated cardboard or other suitable material, as will occur to those skilled in the art, and the cushioned corner clip and the planar sections 10 and 11 respectively, may and preferably are, provided with longitudinally spaced raised sections 14 and 15 respectively, which serve to locate a band or strap positioned over the cushioned corner clip, as hereinafter described.
By referring now to FIGURE 2 of the drawing, it will be seen that a stack of sheet-like articles S has been disclosed, and wherein the articles S are in superimposed and edge-aligned position, and wherein a plurality of the corner clips as seen in FIGURE 1 of the drawing are applied to the upper and lower longitudinal edges of the assembly of sheet-like articles S. The respective planar sections 10 and 11 are shown with the preferred raised sections 14 and 15 thereon, and these locate and desirably position two bands or sections of strapping 16 which are positioned about the assembly of sheet-like articles S and tensioned and held in tensioned position by locking clips 17, all as known in the art.
The bands or strapping 16 may be plastic or metal, as also known in the art, and it will occur to those skilled in the art that the cushioned corner clips and particularly the angularly disposed planar sections 10 and 11 may be formed of metal or rigid plastic, as desired.
By referring now to FIGURE 3 of the drawing, an enlarged cross-section taken on line 3-3 of FIGURE 1 may be seen, and it will be observed that the angularly disposed planar sections of the cushioned corner clip are shown formed of metal, as for example, a metal stamping or a cut section from a metal channel with the raised sections 14 and 15 formed therein by suitable dies. The cushioning material 12 is illustrated as a section of corrugated cardboard and it is shown secured to the metal corner clip and specifically, the planar sections 10 and 11 thereof, by a suitable adhesive 13.
It will occur to those skilled in the art that other materials may be substituted for the corrugated cardboard, for example, laminated paper, foamed polystyrene plastic, etc.
It will thus be seen that a cushioned corner clip has been disclosed which meets the several objects of the invention, and having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A cushioned clip for protecting the corners of articles having strapping thereabout, and consisting of a rigid angularly-shaped single piece having two interconnected right angular planar portions, and a co-extensive liner of cushioning material secured thereto.
2. The cushioned corner clip set forth in claim 1, and wherein said single piece is metallic and the cushioning material is cardboard.
3. The cushioned corner clip set forth in claim 1 and wherein said piece is metallic and the cushioning material is foamed plastic material.
4. The cushioned corner clip set forth in claim 1 and wherein said single piece is metallic and the cushioning material is corrugated cardboard.
