W. B. HATFIELD.
KNIFE.
N0. 336,3 4. Patenge d Feb. 16, 1886..
N PETERS. Pnnwum n hgr. Washizfit c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM BARKER HATFIELD, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS, (LIMITED,) OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,314, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed December 8, 1885. Serial No.184,579. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM B. HATFIELD, of Sheflield, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
Myimprovement consists in the combination, with a knife-blade which has an integral flat tang, of a metal bolster grooved so as to embrace the heel of the k mite-blade, and pro vided with a collar that fits the tang of the knife-blade and abuts against the handle when the blade-tang is inserted in the handle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is asideview of aknife embodying my improve ment. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the bolster and adjacent part of the handle, including a side view of the heel of the knifeblade and the tang. Fig. 3 is a back view of the knife.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the knife-blade. It is curved longitudinally both along the edge and the back, and the edge and back converge to a point. It is such a blade as is commonly used by cooks for carving. Its shape, however, is immaterial so far as my present improvementis concerned. The knife-blade is made of steel, as usual, and it is provided with a flat integral tang, a.
B designates a bolster, which preferably will be made of east metalsuch, for-instance,
as malleable castiron. It consists, essentially, of a narrow piece tapering laterally toward one end and provided in the upper side with a groove, 1), extending from one end to the other, and furnished with a collar, 1). The
heel of the knife-blade fits in the groove b 01 the bolster, and the tang a fits tightly in a hole extending through the bolster from the groove 1) to the inner end of the collar 1). The collar b of the bolster is hollowed out at the inner end to fit over the contiguous end of the handle O. The handle will preferably be made of india-rubber or like material. The knifeblade is upset at the heel and fitted to the bolster, and the bolster is subsequently compressed laterally to embrace said upset portion and support the heel of the knifeblade firmly. The bolster may be also pressed up against the edge of the blade at the heel of the blade. The tang of the blade is driven into the handle, and the collar of the bolster will be forced over the end of the handle. The tang of the blade will secure the blade and the bolster to the handle. The bolster will support and strengthen the blade.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with aknife-blade having an integral fiat tang and an upset heel portion, of a metal bolster grooved and pressed to firmly embrace said upset portion of the heel of the blade, and provided with a collar fitting the tang, and a handle receiving the tang and the collar of the bolster, substantially as specified.
