No. 407,637 2 Claims. (Cl. 83-564) This invention relates to punching apparatus and more particularly to'apparatus for punching apertures in sheet material such as metal or the like.
Heretofore, punching apparatus has been devised in which the male die was slidably mounted on a cantilevered arm for cooperation with a corresponding female die to effect the formation of openings in sheet material having substantial width and depth. A disadvantage of punching apparatus of this type was that the cantilevered arm was inconvenient in that the space it occupied was useful only while the punching apparatus was in use.
A principal object of the invention is to provide punching apparatus which has all of the advantages of the cantilever type but which can readily be swung to an outof-the-way position when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide punching apparatus of the stated type wherein the die frame is balanced for return to the operative position so that it can be quickly placed in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a composite punching apparatus wherein a plurality of punching apparatus are disposed in spaced relation on a common table for convenient sequential punching operations.
A further object of the invention is to provide a composite punching apparatus of the type described wherein said table may be used for assembly operations when the apparatus are swung to the out-of-the-way positions.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation view of punching apparatus made in accordance with the present invention, shown in the operative position;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation view of a portion of the punching apparatus of FIGURE 1; shown in the out-ofthe-way position;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the punching apparatus of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of another portion of the punching apparatus of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the guide and die portions of the punching apparatus of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of the dies of the punching apparatus of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 7 is a rear elevation view of a composite punching apparatus; and
FIGURE 8 is a perspective view of a portion of the composite punching apparatus of FIGURE 7.
Referring now to the drawing and more particularly to FIGURE 1, the punching apparatus of the present invention is indicated generally by reference numeral 10 and includes a substantially fiat base 12 and an upright standard 16 secured, as by Welding or the like, to the base 12. The standard 16 is of generally rectangular configuration but has a top surface defined by an inclined surface 18 and a surface 20 intersecting the surface 18. The standard 16 is also formed with an opening 22, for purposes hereafter described, as seen best in FIGURE 8.
According to the present invention, there is provided a guide 24 for sliding reception of a male die 26, described more fully hereinafter. The guide 24 is secured in perpendicular relation to an arm 28 of an L-shaped frame 30 by a support 32. The frame 30 has an arm 34 extending in parallelism with the guide 24 and is provided at its outer extremity with an opening through which passes a bolt 36 secured in position by a nut 38. The bolt 36 also passes through the opening 22 in the standard 16 and allows movement of the guide and the frame from the position illustrated in FIGURE 1 to the position illustrated in FIGURE 2.
Secured to the upper end of the male die 26 is one end of a hinge 40 the other end of which is attached to an elongated handle 42 at a point 44 intermediate the right end of the handle 42 as viewed in FIGURE 1, and pivot 46 formed in a bracket 48 secured to the arm 28 of the frame 30. By this arrangement, downwad movement of the handle 42 effects downward movement of the male die 26 within the guide 24 and effects a mechanical advantage to the punching action between the male die and a removable, adjustable female die 50 received in a recess 52 to the top surface of the base 12. The recess 52 may communicate with an opening through which passes the knock-outs formed by the punching operation. These knock-outs may be collected in a suitable receptacle beneath the base 12.
As best shown in FIGURE 1, the arm 34 is normally locked in the position illustrated by means of a latch 54 which is pivotally mounted for rotation about a bolt 56 received in an opening in the arm. 34. The latch 54 has a lower surface having an inclined portion 58 corresponding generally to the surface 18 of the standard 16 but shaped to permit free rotation of the latch 54, as required. The latch 54 is also formed with a downwardly extending tang 60 having an edge 62 which normally engages a shoulder formed by the surfaces 18 and 20. The latch 54 is normally held in the locking position illustrated by means of its own weight. The frame 30 may be pivoted to the out-of-the-way position illustrated in FIGURE 2.
Referring to FIGURES 5 and 6, there is shown the guide 24 and the male die 26 slidably mounted therein. The die has two vertically extending slots 64 and includes a mounting 66 for pivotally securing the die to hinge 40 by means of cap screws 68. Disposed in slots 64 are bushings 70 through which pass bolts 72 (threaded into the other guide portion) for slidably securing the die 26 to the guide 24. As seen in FIGURE 5, the lower end of guide 26 is in close relation to base 12 when the frame 30 is in the operative position. The female die 50 is secured to base 12 by four cap screws 74.
Referring to FIGURES 7 and 8, the workpieces may be guided into the desired position on the base 12 by guide means 76 which is preferably in the form of an elongated angle iron. The guide means 76 may be adapted for adjustment from left to right and secured in any desired position by means of fastening elements 78. Calibrating means may be formed in the surface of the base 12 to facilitate proper alignment of the workpiece longitudinally of the base 12.
In FIGURE 7, a composite punching apparatus is shown wherein a table 80 carries: a plurality of spaced apart punching apparatus of the type described above. Such table may be movable and serve as an assembly bench for punched material. It will be appreciated that the punching apparatus may be used sequentially or alternately, as desired.
The above-described embodiment of punching apparatus is but the preferred form of applicants invention, it being contemplated the applicant be limited only by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. Punching apparatus comprising a base, an upright standard secured to said base, a frame having a first arm pivotally mounted on said standard and a second arm extending over said base in spaced relation thereto, said standard having an inclined upper surface and a shoulder,
a latch pivotally mounted on said first arm, said latch having a tang adapted to engage said shoulder to lock said frame in operative position, a guide mounted at the end of said second arm and extending in spaced parallelism to said first arm, a first die slidably disposed in said guide, a cooperating second die received in said base, said frame being swingable from a position in which said first and second dies are in cooperating relation to a position in which said first die is away from said second die.
2. Punching apparatus comprising a base, a rearwardly opening channel-shaped standard mounted on said base, a frame having a first arm pivotally mounted between said channel legs and a second arm extending over said base in spaced relation thereto, each of the legs of said channel-shaped standard having an inclined upper surface and a shoulder, a bifurcated latch pivotally mounted on said first arm, each arm of said latch having a tang adapted to engage said shoulders to lock said frame in operative position, a guide mounted at the end of said second arm and extending in spaced parallelism to said first arm, a first die slidably carried by said guide, a cooperating second die received in said base, said frame being swingable from a position in which said first and second dies are in cooperating relation to an out-of-the- Way position.

1.
