FEED-WATER HEATER.
QPECIPIQATION formihg part of Letters Patent No. 317,636, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed January 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it na-y concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL FUNK, a citizen of the United States, residin g at La Grosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of lVisoonsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Vater Heaters, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in feed-water heaters; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 1
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the outer shell or jacket, having the inlet-port a at the bottom thereof for the passage of the exhaust-steam from an engine and the outlet-port b for the escape of the same, and in one side of said l jacket 'is provided an opening, 0, surrounded on its outer sidewith a flange, (I, that receives a removable cap, c, whereby said opening is closed. This hole permits of the hand being passed within the shell or jacket, in order that the interior thereof may be readily cleaned.
13 represents the inner cylinder or waterreceptacle, which latter enters the lower portion thereof through a connect-ingpipe, f, with the same and the outer cylinder or jackct, having suitable packingboxes, as shown, and at the upper portion of said water-chamber is the outlet-pipe, also having a similar connection with the outer shell. Said shell or jacket is provided on its top plate with an opening, 9, which is covered by a plate, 72, screwed securely thereto by the bolts 1', and which also serves as ahand-hole for theinterior of the heater or space surrounding the same. If desirable, two or more of the hand-holes in the side of the outer jacket may be provided.
The inner shell or waterheater consists of the cylinder portion, which extends from the bottom plate of the outer casing nearly to the top plate thereof, having a space between the top plate of the same and the topof said jacket. Said top and bottom plates of the inner cylinder are provided with marginal flanges j, which are perforated to receive rivets, by which they are secured to said cylinder. The plates are also provided with openings k, which have marginal flanges Z, by means of which the flues m are riveted thereto.
Below the bottom plate, and between the same and the lower plate of the outer casing, is a space, 72, which communicates with the fines and provides a passage for the Steam from the inlet-pipe. Said spaceis surrounded by the lower edge of the inner cylinder, forming an inclosure, and upon which said cylinder is supported, resting upon the lower plate of the outer cylinder or casing, as shown in the drawings.
The heater is provided with the usual drippipe and blow-pipe,of any approved construction.
It willbe seen by reference to the annexed drawings that the upper and lower ends of the flues are riveted to the flanges on the top and bottom of the inner cylinder, thus preventing leakage by contraction and expansion at these points; also, the fines being large, (about six inches in diameter,) permits a greater heating surface and a free circulation of the exhauststeam from the engine and relieving the steam from back pressure, at the same time providing ample room between said lines to remove all scales and impurities that accumulate from the feed-water in the heater, which removal is accomplished through the handhole, which cannot be done in heaters having small flucs or tubes, and by providing the large flues with thick material the same will not corrode as quickly as smaller flues.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The feed-water heater herein described, consisting of the outer casing, A, having the openings 0 in its vertical wall near the bottom thereof and arranged directly opposite the opening in the inner casing, and the inner casing, B, constructed as shown, said outer casing provided with the flange d, encircling the opening 0, having the exterior screwthreads to engage interior threads in the cap 0, whereby access may be had to the inner cylinder at its lower end, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In an upright feed-water heater, the combination, with the outer easing, constructed as shown, of the inner cylinder having at its lower end the opening directly opposite the opening 0 in the outer casing, and provided at its top and bottom with the plates of similar eonstructiomhaving the outer flange to engage the inner wall of the inner cylinder, which is secured thereto, and each having the openings to receive the upper and lower ends of the flues m, said openings surrounded by the marginal flange Z, whereby said flues are secured to the plates by bolts passing through the flange and flue, the whole arranged as shown and described.
7 3. In a feed-water heater of the class herein shown, the combination, withthe outer e'ylinder or casing, constructed as described, of the inner cylinder, 13, provided with the flues m and the. opening, and the upper and lower plates having the flanged openings to receive the fines and marginal flange, whereby said plates are secured to the inner cylinder by bolts, as shown, the lower plate arranged within the lower portion of said inner cylinder to form a passage between the same and the bottom plate of the outer easing, the lower marginal edge of the inner cylinder serving as a support for the latter, and an inclosing wall for the space between the bottom of the inner cylinder and outer casing, the whole arranged as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL FUNK.
