GARPENTERS COMBINATION TOOL. No. 307,321. Patented 001;. 28, 1884.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER \V. OSBORN, OF ELMIRA, NEV YORK.
CARPENTERS COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,321, dated October 28, 1884.
Application filed May 26, 1884.
view of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sec-l tion taken on line a: a" of Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a horizontal section taken on line y y of Fig. 2, and Fig. at a detail view in perspective of the movable head.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in tools for carpenters use; and the object thereof is to improve this class of tools whereby time is saved in its use in laying out timber for houses or other structures, laying out sills, studding,
joist, and other like material employed in building, the measurements being made with correctness and in comparatively a short space of time.
The above objects I attain by a tool constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the rod having upon its face a suitable scale of inches and fractions thereof, as shown" in Fig. 1. Upon this red A are heads B O, the head 13 being permanently secured to the end of the rod, while the head 0 is adapted to slide thereon and held stationary at any point along the same by a setscrew, a. Vith the exception that one is rigidly connected to the rod and the other adapted to slide thereon, the heads are the same in form and construction, each having an extension, D, disposed longitudinally wit-h the rod, and dovetail-mortises b c in a direction at right angles to the length of 1 the rod.
Seated in the mortises b c are respectively (No model.)
the slides E and tongues F, which are beveled at their edges, as shown in Fig. 3, to correspond with the dovetail of the mortises. Both the slides Fraud tongues F have elongated slots (1 a, respectively, the edges thereof being beveled to correspond with the beveled head of the set-screwsjf, this only being required,
however, in the tongues F, so as to allow the head of the screw to come flush with the upper surface thereof. These slides and tongues are adjustable transversely with the length of the rod by means of the elongated slots and the set-screws, and held at their adjusted position by thumb-nuts g, which draw the heads of the screws against the tongues F, which act as a clamp for the slides E, to hold them stationary. The slides E at their outer ends have thumb-pieces h, for convenience of handling them, and the tongues at their inner edges are provided with a scale of inches and fractions thereof. The tongues F have openings 13 through them, so that the depth of thelumber or width thereof may be more readily seen and the tongues adjusted accordingly. The slides E are provided with scales on their outer edges, and the extensions D of the heads B 0 form supports for the rod A.
Having now fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A carpenters tool consisting of a rod having a scale thereon, and provided with two heads, one being rigidly connected thereto and the other adjustable, each head having an extension longitudinally with the rod, and each two dovetail mortises, and a slide and tongue adapted to fit in the mortises and adj nstable with relation to each other, said tongues having openings through them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. l
