FURGUS KELLY, OF DERBY, ASSIGNOR TO THE OSBORNE 8: CHEESMAN COMPANY, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,054, dated October 21, 1884:.
Application filed July 23, 1884. (N0 model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Fences KELLY, a citi- Zcn of the United States, residing at Derby, New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Susponders, of which the following is a specifica tion.
The invention relates to suspenders, and has for its purpose to provide a cheap, simple, and ornamental cast-off attachment, whereby the Suspender-ends may be instantaneously detached from the buckle, to avoid the necessity of constantly buttoning and unbuttoning said parts.
The invention consists, essentially, in a castoff attachment for suspenders, comprising a loop or holder having an opening and a slide bar for closing the opening and engaging a loop or similar device carried by a part of the suspenders.
Other features of the invention will be here inafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, part of the plate being broken away to show the interior. Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing amodification. Fig. 4 is asimilar view, partly in section, showing the actuatingspring.
In said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 indicates the plate or loop to which thesuspender-ends 2 are attached. Formed upon this plate or attached thereto in any suitable manner is a casing, 3, which may be of a circular form or of any desired shape, having an opening, 4, cut from its upper edge toward the center. The entrance to this opening is closed by a curved slide-bar, 5, having an arm, 6,which is pivoted upon a central rivet, 7, said arm being provided with a leaf-spring, 9, having its end bearing upon the under side thereof upon one side of the pivotal point, the spring being held in place by stud-pins 8 within the casing. By the pressure of this'spring the s1idc-bar 5 is normally thrown across the opening 4:.
In the rear wall of the casing 3 is formed a curved slot, 10, through which projects a pin, 11, which is rigidly attached to the rear end of the slide-bar 5, and has an eye, 12, to which is attached a chain, 13, having a ring or other bar closed.
suitable device upon its end, by which it may be grasped. By drawing downward upon this chain the slide-bar will be retracted against the tension of the spring 9, and by releasing the chain the slide-bar will be again thrown by the spring across the entrance to the opening 4.
In use, the loop 14: of the suspender-buckle is inserted within the opening and the slide- \Vhen it is desired to cast oif the suspendcr-ends, drawing upon the chain will instantly release said loop from the slide-bar.
As a modification in construction, Inlay substitute for the casing3a tubular ring, 15, having its continuity broken between the points 16, and the curved slide-bar 17 being arranged within the ring upon one side of the opening and thrown forward to close the latter by a spring, 18. A slot, 19, is out upon the back of the ring-15, and a pin, 20, is passed through said slot and firmly attached to the slide-bar 17. This pin has an eye, 21, to which is fastened a chain or cord, 22. By drawing upon the latter the slide-bar will be retracted in the manner already described. Upon the inner surface of the ring, upon each side of the opening, is formed or attached a flange, 28, the end contiguous to the opening being beveled off, so that it lies in a vertical plane, or nearly so. The loop of the suspender-buckle being inserted within the opening of the ring and the slide-bar closed, the ends of the buckle-loop will lie between the ends of the flanges, and when the slide-bar is thrown back the flange end will prevent the buckle-loop from riding up on the opposite part of the ring, which would interfere with the ready detachment from the buckle.
Instead of the chains for retracting the slideba-r, I may use a cord, tape, or othersuitable device; or I may dispense with the same entirely, and attach to the pin which projects from the slide-bar through the slot in the casing or ring a small button, which may be operated by the finger. The slide-barwhich closes the opening in the ring enters an aperture in the latter when in engagement with the buckle, thus giving support to both ends of said bar.
This invention provides a simple, neat, and convenient cast-oft attachment, which is comparatively inexpensive and very durable. It
is instantaneous in operation, and both susl the suspcnder-ends may be connected with or pender-ends may be cast oil at the same time detached from the suspender-bucklc, substanand readily attached. tially as described.
Having thus described my invention, what I at. In a castoff attachment for suspenders, 5 claim isthe combination, with a loop or plate to which 2 5 1. A castoff attachment for suspenders, the suspender-ends are secured, of a circular consisting of aloop or holder having an opencasing or ring attached to or formed upon said ing, a slide-bar for closing said opening and plate, having its continuity broken upon one engaging a loop, and a device for retracting the side by an opening to admit the buckle-loop, a
IO slide-bar, substantially as described. spring-actuated slidebar which closes said o 2. The combination of a suspenderbucklc, i opening, a pin attached to said bar and proa loop or holder having an opening, and a jecting through a slot in the casing or ring, spring-impelled slide-bar for closing said openand a chain or cord connected with said pin, ing, substantially as described. 1 substantially as described.
