Description

(No Modem v V 'B. G. LAURAINE. RUFPLING ATTACHMENT ZE'OR SEWING MACHINES. No. 301,502;
Patented July '8 18.84.
WITNESSES .Alttorney;
N PETERS, Phalbhkhogmpm wmxmm o c.
UNITED STATES PATE T; OFFICE.
EUGENE G. LAURAIN-E, OF GUERO, TEXAS.
RUFFLlNG ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,502, dated July 8, 1884.
Application filed September 13, 1883. (No model.)
the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a view in perspective of a por-- tion of a sewing-machine illustrating my improved rufiiing attachment in position. Fig. 2 is a front end view of a portion of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a top view of the entire attachment. Fig. 4 is a side view thereof, and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the presser-foot, and B is the bar that carries the same. To the bar B my attachment is pivotally connected by an eye, 0, on the top end of its arm 1), arranged on a lateral pin or screw, E, on bar B. By means of this pivotal connection the attachment can be thrown up out of the way in plain sewing, and the necessity of removing it from the machine is thus obviated. The arm D carries a flat plate, F, that has one end turned under, as shown at G, which end forms a flat loop, and is provided with a tongue or extension, H, projecting from the top of said loop and toward the pivot of the attachment.
A plate, J, having its free end recessed, as at K, to receive the needle of the machine, has its outer side edge at its other end brought 40 over parallel with the main portion and above the same, as shown at L, and is provided with a spring tongue or plate, M, on top, which is inserted in the end loop, G, of the plate E9 toward the pivot of the attachment.
When it is desired to rufile the goods, they are placed underneath the plate J, and the plain band (or straight piece of goods) between the scroll or body of the device and the said plate J, thereby separating the ruffle from the band. Then the stitch is lengthened and the goods are sewed. The plate J merely separates the goods to be ruffled from the band, (or straight piece,) while the motion of the feed of the sewing-machine, when the stitch is lengthened, effects the rufliing.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with the flat main plate having the loop, of the ruflling-plate having its side at one end turned over parallel with its main portion, and provided with a spring tongue or plate that is inserted in the loop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the main plate having one end turned over to form a loop, and provided with a tongue or extension from the top of said loop, of the ruffling-plate having its free end recessed, while its other end is turned over at its side parallel with the main portion of the plate, and is provided with a spring tongue or plate that is received in the loop, as set forth.
In-testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE G. LAURAINE.
