WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,826, dated August 28, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIPHALET S. SCRIP- TURE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and Improved lVrench; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved wrench; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same.
In the drawings like parts of the invention are designated by similar letters of reference.
The nature of the invention made by me consists in employing with a. wrench, a roller hung eccentrically within the sliding jaw of the same, as hereinafter described and for the purpose set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to speak of its construction and operation.
In the drawings A shows the handle of the wrench and B the main shaft of the same. This main shaft B, is provided with a ratchet bar C, into which fit the ratchet teeth a, a, cut upon the shank D, and so arranged as to adjust the position of the movable jaw E, and in connection with the spring F attached within the groove b of the corresponding shank G, to retain the same E in any desired position, when adjusted.
E shows the movable jaw of the wrench, adjusted to any desired position by means of the ratchet teeth a a and ratchet bar c as heretofore set forth.
H shows the stationary jaw of the wrench, cast directly upon the main shaft B.
The movable jaw E is provided with a groove (e) within which is hung eccentrically a roller I, fastened to the same by means of the pivot passing through the movable jaw E and roller I. The edge of this roller (I) is serrated, for the purpose of enabling it to grip firmly and securely, the article to be turned. When desired not to use the roller I, it is held in position by means of the spring catch (l) placed on the shank D, and fitting into a slot (m) on roller I.
Among the advantages arising from the use of my improved wrench may be enumerated: First. The roller from its shape will roll to its work and leave it, thus obviating the necessity of changing the position of the movable jaw E, to liberate it from its work. Second. The roller acts as a compensator of space between the notches on the ratchet-bar, making this mode of adjusting the movable jaw, available in the stead of the slow screw now in use for the purpose. Third. The roller forms a perfect gripperl and when rolled back to its place within the movable jaw, leaves a convenient square nut wrench, thus combining in one article a wrench and a `gripper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The serrated roller I hung eccentrically within the movable jaw E in combination with the spring catch (l) arranged and operated in the manner described and for the purpose set forth.
