UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMESOBRIEN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOT FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,096, dated December 11, 1883,
' Application filed October 12, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES OBRIEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots for Horses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to boots for horses to protect the legs of the animal from injury.
The main object of my invention is to produce a neat and substantial boot which, while it may be securely attached by straps, shall have an elastic fastening grip or hold on the leg, so as not to impede circulation, and give freedom of motion to the joint or joints of the leg where it is applied; and theinvention consists ina novel construction of the boot by which a yielding material is made to form a part of the fastening device, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in elevation as seen from the inside of a horses leg, in part,
with my improved boot applied. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of said boot when fully open, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the same closed.
Ais the pad of the boot, which consists of a leather outer sole stitched upon an inner sole or body, B, suitably lined or padded, andmade with quarter-pieces b b to encircle or nearly encircle the leg of the animal. Secured on or along each side edge of the pad Aas, for instance, between it and the body Bbystitching or otherwise are two broad elastic flaps of yielding or elastic material 00, which may consist of strips of elastic webbing, either single or doubled, as shown in Fig. 3. D Dand D D are the straps and buckles by which the boot is secured on the leg of the animal, and which are fastened, respectively--that is, the straps D D-to the one elastic flap O and the buckles D D to the other elastic. flap G. The elastic or yielding material thus forms a portion of the fastening device, so that when the straps are entered through the buckles and tightened up the flaps O C will be more or'less stretched and furnish an elastic fastening or fit of the boot on the leg to the greater comfort of the horses and increased freedom of action so far as the joint of the .leg is con cerned.
Having thus described my invention, I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The elastic flaps O O, in combination with the body portion B of the boot provided with the pad A, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the straps D and buckles D with the elastic flaps G O and the body portion B of the boot provided with the pad A, essentially as shown and described.
