WILLIAM EZRA BADGER, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS.
GOVERNOR-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,954, dated December 11, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM E; BADGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governor-Valves for Steam- Engines or other Fluid Supplies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such IO as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica- I 5 tion.
My invention relates to governor-valves for steam-engines and other fluid-supplies; and it consists in certain details of mechanical construction, as hereinafter explained, the object of my invention being to render the governor very sensitive and quick in its operation by equilibrating the valve to the pressure of fluid.
The drawings accompanying this specification represent in Figure 1 a sectional eleva- 2 5 tion, and in Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of a valve containing my improvement. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the valve. I
In said drawings, Arepresents my valve, to
the upper end of which is secured the lower 0 end of the stem B, which connects the valve with the governor, thevalveAbeing contained within a case, 0, through the upper head or cap of which the stem B passes, while the lower end of such case, by an opening, D, com- 5 municates with the steam-chest of asteam-engine or other object, the fluid-supply of which is to be regulated by the valve. The case 0 is formed with an inlet-port, E, at its upper part for admission of steam to its interior.
The valve is a straight tube, having upon each end an annular rib, the upper rib being shown at a and the lower at b, and these two ribs operate with a tubular cylinder or cup, F, secured to or formed upon the inside lower'part 5 of the case 0, the upper and lower ends, a, b,
of this cylinder constituting valve-seats, to operate with the ribs a b of the valve. The up- Application filed August 24, 1883. (No model.)
"per end of the cup F is open, while its lower end is covered with a bottom, 0, and its sides contain ports d d, &c., for escape of steam. Steam entering at E flows around and through the valve and escapes at D in greater or less quantities, according to extent to which the valve is opened or closed. It will be seen that v as the valve is astraight cylinder open at both ends and with each end of uniform diameter, and operating each with a valve-seat, a or b, the pressure of fluid is uniformly distributed upon all parts of the valve, and the latter thereby becomes perfectly balanced or equilibrated to such. pressure; hence very little power is required at the hands of the governor to move the valve, and the two are rendered very sensitive in their operation. v
In order that the fluid may be admitted to the case 0 in a smooth and easy flow, and thereby prevent any tendency to hammering movement of the valve, I form the lower part of each port 12 of the cup F pyramidal in shape, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the fluid 0 by this means being let on or shut off gradually. To enhance this effect, I form the upper flange, a, of the valve deeper than the lower one, and I form in such flange pyramidal recesses e e, &c., through which fluid flows into the cup F.
I claim The caseC, having an inlet, E, whereby steam enters above the valve, and an outlet, D, below the valve, in combination with hollow valve A, which is open at the bottom and has openings in its top, and cup F, provided with openings d in its side and valve-seats a and b, the said hollow valve being providedwith eXternal flanges, a and b, of approximately equal '8 diameter, corresponding to said valve-seats, the whole constituting a balanced valve, substantially as set forth. 7
In testimony whereof I afflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM EZRA BADGER. Witnesses:
A. HAYDEN,
F. CURTIS.
