(Cl. 1281-287) The present invention generally relates to an article of wearing apparel and more particularly to a device for holding a diaper in position on an infant and rendering unnecessary the wearing of the customary waterproof, outer garment usually referred to as rubber pants although the same device could be employed for use on incontinent adults by varying the size thereof.

An object of the present invention is to provide a diaper holder incorporating a waterproof envelope section disposed centrally therein and opening to the inner surface thereof for holding a diaper in position for effectively absorbing and containing body wastes and retaining such wastes within the envelope whereby the remainder of the holder will be maintained in dry condition thus reducing the tendency of the diaper to chafe or cause a rash.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a diaper holder which is extremly simple in construction, eliminates the necessity of safety pins or other similar dangerous fastening devices, is reinforced at all points of wear, easy to launder, neat in appearance, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a plan view of the diaper holder of the present invention with one end of the waterproof envelope folded outwardly for showing the non-slip construction thereof;

Figure 2 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 2-2 of Figure l illustrating the details of construction of the non-slip feature and its relationship to the diaper inserted into the envelope; and

Figure 3 is a transverse, sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 3 3 of Figure l illustrating the details of construction of the main body portion of the diaper holder and showing the relationship of the diaper when inserted into the waterproof envelope.

Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral generally designates the diaper holder of the present invention which somewhat resembles an hour glass in shape and is provided with end edges which are elasticized as indicated by the numeral 12 for providing a waist encircling band of variable size for fitting infants of different sizes. Coacting snap fastener elements are provided for securing the diaper holder on the infant, the snap fasteners 14 being provided at the waist band and snap fasteners 15 adjacent each end of a notch or recess 16 in the side edges of the holder which receive the legs thereby retaining the diaper holder in position and snugly embracing the legs of the infant.

The main body of the diaper holder includes an inner layer 18 of fabric material for engaging the surface or skin of the infant. The main body panel is also provided with an outer layer 20 which may be of fabric material and which may be decorative or of any color desired. A waterproof intermediate layer 22 of the main body construction is disposed between inner layer 18 and outer layer 20 and is to provide overall moisturecontrol, thus eliminating the necessity for any outer Waterproof garment such as rubber pants.y The single thickness of the outer layer provides better ventilation for the babys skin and avoids bulkiness. The inner layeri 18 is provided with an enlarged slit-like opening 24 ,and connected to the edges of the slit-like opening by stitching 26 is an envelope of waterproof construction designated by the numeral 28 for receiving a folded diaper 30 therein. The diaper 30 may be of a fabric type or of the disposable type.

The ends of the slit-like opening 24 are provided with a transverse member 32 forming a partial closure therefor with each inner edge of the closure member 32 having a transverse strip of fabric with elastic friction inducing strip material 34 such as rubber thereon which engages the surface of the adjacent end portion of the diaper 30 for frictionally retaining the ends of the diaper in position in the envelope thus preventing longitudinal movement thereof in relation to the diaper holder and retaining the diaper in the desired position. Sidewise shift of the diaper 30 is prevented by the side edges of the envelope which are defined by folded under portions 36. A snap fastener element 40 is provided on each side edge of the garment adjacent the leg receiving recess as shown in Figure 1. The snap fastener element 40 coacts with a snap fastener element 42 on the edge or flap of the waterproof envelope for holding the envelope open to obtain full use of the length and width of the envelope. This important feature provides a practical means for confining the dampness and waste matter to the envelope area. Any suitable edging may be used, such as bias tape 38, if desired and the entire device may be provided with decorative rules or any other decorative items if desired.

The only exposed plastic, rubber or other waterproof material is the envelope section and the diaper covers the envelope completely, including the side sections. Therefore, there is no possibility of its coming into contact with the infants skin and all dampness is confined to this area.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention, Further, since numerous modiiications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the eXact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the nvention -as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

l. A diaper holder comprising a generally hourglass shaped main body panel having waist encircling end edges, fastening means on each end of each end edge for releasably retaining the end edges in waist encircling relation, said panel including an outer and inner layer of cloth material and an intermediate layer of waterproof material, said inner layer having an enlarged longitudinal slit, an open-sided envelope of waterproof material disposed in underlying relation to the inner layer with the edges of the envelope being attached to the edges of the slit with the envelope extending laterally outwardly of the edges of the slit, transverse end members extending across said slit whereby the edges of the slit and the end members coact with the envelope to define a pocket for a diaper and whereby the diaper may be exposed through the slit, and coacting snap fasteners provided on the edges of the envelope and on the front of the diaper holder for holding the envelope open whereby to expose a larger area of the diaper disposed in the pocket.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein the inner surface of said end members is provided with projecting ribs of resilient material extending transversely of the end members for frictionally gripping the diaper.

transverse end members extending across said slit whereby the edges of `the slit and -the A'end members coact with the envelope to define a pocket for a diaper and whereby the diaper may be exposed through the slit, and coacting fastener means provided on the edges of the envelope and on the front of the diaper holder for holding the envelope open whereby to expose a larger area of the diaper disposed in said pocket.
