IJ ITE TATES ATENT FFICEQ q. CONGRESS-GAITER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,312, dated October 23,1883.
Application filed August 6, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL R. PACK- ARI), 2d, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of .Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Congress- Gaiters, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention consists in certain improvements in congress-gaiters, whereby their usefulness and durability are increased in certain particulars, as I will now proceed to describe.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view of a congressgaiter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear view of the same.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in both the figures.
In the drawings, a represents the vamp, b the quarter, and d the elastic gorings, of acongress-gaiter.
In carrying out my invention I extend the vamp backwardly under the gorings and form the front edges of the quarter so that it extends directly down from the rear edges of the gorings to the sole at a point in close proximity to the front of the heel and over the stiff counter or heel-stiffener e. The seams c, uniting the vamp to the quarter, are thus located farther back than is usual heretofore in boots of this class.
The following advantages result from this of the shankin such close proximity to the heel as to be made practically inflexible thereby. When the seam uniting the vamp and quarter is placed farther forward, as usual, it is neither backed by the heel-stiffener nor placed over an inflexible part of the bottom; hence the leather is liable to bend and wrinkle at the seam, causing the threads to chafe and ultimately break. I prefer to make the quarter in a single piece without a vertical seam at the heel. The elastic gorings, united to the forward edges of the quarter, cause the latter to conform to the contour of the back of the foot, and so that the quarter requires but little crimping or molding to adopt it to said .contour.
It is obvious that the absence of a vertical seam at the heel of the boot is a marked advantage, making the quarter more durable-and easy to the foot.
I claim As an improved article of manufacture, a congressgaiter having its vamp extending backward under the goring to the line of the breast of the heel, and there united to the quarter by a seam, which forms a practically straight line from the sole to the top of the goring, the quarters extending from the sole to the top of the shoe in a single piece, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name i to this specification,in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 1st day of August, 1883.
NATHANIELR. PACKARD, 2D.
