Description

DETACHABLE CUFF FOR TROUSERS. LEGS Filed Oct. 14, 1955 ATTORNEYS United States Patent O 2,822,596 DETACHABLE CUFF FOR TROUSERS LEGSl Helmer Aaskov, Fresno, Calif.
Application October 14, 1955, Serial No. 540,506
1 Claim. (Cl. 24-252) This invention, a detachable cuffv for a trousers leg, comprises a plurality of hidden clips within a cuff, separably connectable to a culess trousers leg in an arrangement such that the cuffs will be clamped to and will be seemingly a part of the leg.
Among important objects of the invention are the following:
First, to permit the free interchange of a plurality of diierent cuffs, for use with a single pair of trousers, with said cuffs being of colors the same as or contrasting harmoniously with that of the trousers;
Second, to permit the swift and easy replacement of a worn culf by a new one to thus extend the useful life of the trousers;
Third, to provide an improved clip or clamp means which in closed position will not produce any unseemly bulges in the cuff;
Fourth, to permit the easy adjustment of the clip to open and closed positions respectively, so that the cuifs can be attached to or detached from the trousers leg with ease;
Fifth, to permit the clips to be manufactured at a very low cost; and
Sixth, to allow a single set of clips to be used with any of a large number of cuffs.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claim appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the lower portion of a trousers leg equipped with a cuff attachment according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse section on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clips per se.
The reference numeral designates a trousers leg and in accordance with the present invention, this is made without a cuff. Alternatively, the cuff originally on the leg can be cut off after it has seen its useful life, with the trousers still being usable through the provision of detachable cuffs formed according to the present invention. The cuffs of the invention, it may be noted, may be in various colors contrasting with that of the pair of trousers and might, for example, match the shoes or some other portions of the wearers garments.
In any event, spaced along the length of the cuff, at i opposite sides thereof, are removable clips or clamps 14, each comprising a pair of pivotally connected, crossing clamp elements having confronting jaws at their upper ends biased toward one another by resilient, yielding means associated with the clamp elements.
Each clamp includes a first clamp element 16' having at its upper end a transversely disposed head or jawV 18 out of which are struck small teeth 20 spaced uniare struck out of the material of the same, hinge or pivot sleeves 24.
Lateral projections 26 formed upon the intermediate portion of a second clamp element'28, are rotatably engaged in the hinge sleeves, with the lower end portion of the second element extending through a large opening 29 of the first element.
At its upper end, the element 28 has a flat head 30 formed with inwardly struck teeth"32, and below the shoulders on the clamp element that face downwardly in Figure 3. Element 16, further, hasthe widenedpart t defined by the lower end portion 22, and said widened part terminates at its inner end, that is the end nearer head 18, at a location just above the pivot axis of the clamp elements. As a result, the widened part, since it also projects laterally in opposite directions beyond the sides of the body portion of element 16, cooperates with the laterally projecting portions of head 18 in dening side recesses of element 16 aligned transversely of the element and receiving the rubber band 34. The rubber band is thus limited in its movement longitudinally of the respective clamp elements, should such movement tend to occur, beyond a position in which it is disposed between the heads of the clamp elements and the inner end of the widened part 22.
In use the cuffl 12, which has inwardly turned lips 36 on its top edge isV positioned in embracing relation to the lower edge of the trousers leg. The clips at this time are spread by the user with the teeth of the jaws pene trating the lips and the upper ends of the elements extending between the lips and the adjacent side walls of the cuffs.
On release of the clamps the rubber band will contract and shift the jaws toward one another. The cuff will thus grip the trousers leg portion that extends between the lips and the teeth of the jaws will penetrate the material of the trousers leg to securely connect the cuil? thereto.
When the jaws swing toward one another, the lower ends of the clamp elements will also move toward each other due to the crossing of the clamp elements at their point of pivotal connection. The clips thus are attened and will not produce bulges in the cuff.
When the cuff is to be removed, the clips are spread,
spreading the cuff both at top and bottom thereof so that it can be removed with ease.
It is believed clear that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific Ause or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor changes in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claim. l
What is claimed is:
A clip comprising a pair of elongated clamp elements each formed from av length of thin, ilat material, said elements being disposed in Vcrossing relation intermediate their ends, one of the elements including at one end a head having side portions projecting laterally outwardly beyond the respectively opposite sides of said one clampelement, said one element further including, at the end thereof remote from the head, an elongated widened 'l Patente-d. Feb.. 11,1958V part of rectangular outer conguration, said 'widened' part and the head of the one element cooperating to dene recesses opening upon the opposite sides of the one clamp element which recesses extend the full distance between the head and widened'part, said widened part beingY formedadjacent the recess with outwardly struck hinge sleeves Y aligned transversely of the widened part, theother clamp element having an elongated straight Ybody portion the transverse dimension of which is substantially equal to the distance between the recesses measured along a lineV of the widened part, said other clamp element including a head opposing the head Vof said one clarnp element and projectinglaterally outwardly beyond the sides of the body portion correspondingly to the head of said one clamp element, the respective heads being formed with inwardly struck, confronting teeth; a rubber band circumposed about the respective clamp elements and engaged in said recesses, said rubber band being tensioned to normally bias the heads toward one another; and lateral projections formed upon the body portion of the second named clamp element and rotatably engaged in the hinge sleeves to pivotally connect the elements at their point of crossing.
