3 Claims. (Cl. 223-88) This invention relates to a combination coat and pants hanger.

An object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved assembly of coat hanger and pants holding attachment, said attachment being constructed and arranged to engage a cuff portion of the pants in such a manner as to maintain the legs of the pants draped over the basal part of the coat hanger, said attachment being so contoured as to provide a clearance for the conventional cuff holding stitching.

A more specific object of the invention is to provide, for attachment to a wire coat hanger, a wire structure which will safely maintain a pair of pants suspended from the base bar of the coat hanger with the pants legs draped over said bar, and will do so in such a manner as to keep the creased pants in an unrulfled condition.

Although the pants holding member provided by this invention is more particularly intended for use in combination with a coat hanger, yet said member may, without exceeding the scope of the claimed invention, be combined with other types of hangers.

Other objects, advantages and features of invention will hereinafter appear.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention,

Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. l, a pair of pants being fragmentarily shown, supported by the device. Dotted lines indicate an operational step of applying the pants support to one of the cuffs of the trousers.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the coat hanger part of the device may be an open wooden frame or may, as shown, comprise an open wire frame having a horizontal basal run 5, short vertical end runs 6 and upwardly converging top runs 7, the latter runs near the top of the frame having right angularly inbent parts 8 above which the wire end portions are twisted together at 10, beyond which point one wire end portion is continued to form a supporting hook 11.

Each said wire run '7, preferably at a point nearer to the end of the frame than to its midlength, is provided with a downwardly directed bend 15, the purpose of which will presently appear. Also, the basal wire run 5, by preference and as shown, is provided with a loose fitting pasteboard sleeve 17 which prevents unnecessarily creasing of any garment supported in an overlying relation to the aforesaid wire 5.

Associated with the aforesaid coat hanger wire frame is a wire pants holder member 20 which is broadly U- shaped as to its general outline. The, in general, horizontal basal run 21 of this U-shaped member has its midlength portion upwardly bent at 22, this upbend, by preference and as shown, being of an inverted V shape. Each of the twin arms 24 of the member 20 is shown having a straight lower portion 25 which diverges upwardly 2,750,086 Patented June 12-, 1956 lCC from its mate to some extent and above this diverging part each said run 25, after being inbent somewhat as indicated at 26, extends farther up and terminates in an eye or nearly closed hook 27, these hook portions serving to connect the pants hanger wire 20 with the aforesaid wire down bends 15, thus swingably suspending the pants holder 20 from the coat hanger with the basal wire run 21 of the former normally at a somewhat lower level than the sleeve carrying basal wire run 5 of the latter.

When the device is not in use to support a pair of pants each of the arms 24 of the U will gravitate to a position wherein it rests upon the sleeve 17 carried by the basal wire run 5 of the coat hanger, but when a pair of pants legs 30 carrying cuffs 31, are in place upon the device said arms 24 assume the somewhat inclined positions shown in full lines in Fig. 2. In this view the end portions of the legs 30 of the pants both are looped over the sleeve 17, one pants leg overlying the other with the superimposed pants leg having within its cuif 31 the basal wire run 21 of the member 20, and the upbent portion 22 of said run 21 providing clearance for the conventional cuif holding stitching 32, located in the pants leg seam 33, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. With the pants thus supported the anchored top pants leg will press upon the lower pants leg and the pants will thus be safely maintained in the supported position.

The operation of placing the pants in place upon the device is facilitated by reason of the fact that only one culf (the upper cuff of the superimposed pants legs), need be engaged by the pants holding attachment.

The pants holding member provided by this invention may be combined with other types of hangers than those shown in the drawing provided the hanger comprises an open frame having a horizontally extending basal run over which the legs of the pants may be draped.

I claim:

1. A pants holding attachment adapted to be used with a clothes hanger of the type having a horizontal pants receiving run, a pair of diagonal arms, and suspending means disposed thereabove, said pants holding attachment comprising a member having a bottom edge and a pair of side edges extending upwardly at substantially a right angle from said bottom edge, the upper ends of said side edges being provided with means for pivotal attachment thereof to the diagonal arms of a hanger, the bottom edge of said member being provided with an upwardly extending notch portion between the ends thereof, said notch portion being adapted to accommodate the stitching of a pants cuff, the bottom edge of said member being of a width to fit within a pants cuff with the stitching of said cuff disposed within said notch, the sides of said member being of substantially the same length so as to dispose said bottom edge substantially parallel to the pants receiving run of a hanger when said attachment is secured to said hanger, the length of said sides being such as to dispose said bottom edge below said pants receiving run when said attachment it secured to a hanger.

A pants holding attachment adapted to be used with a clothes hanger of the type having a horizontal pants receiving run, a pair of diagonal arms and suspending means disposed thereabove, said pants holding attachment comprising a length of wire having a bottom run and an end run extending upwardly at substantially a right angle from each end of said bottom run, the upper ends of said end runs having means for pivotal attachment thereof to the diagonal arms of a hanger, the bottom run of said member being provided with an upwardly extending notch portion between the ends thereof, said notch portion being adapted to accommodate the stitching of a pants cuff, the bottom run of said member being of a width to fit within a pants cufi, with the stitching of said cuif disposed within said notch, the end runs of said member being of substantially the same length so as to dispose said bottom run substantially parallel to the horizontal pants receiving run of a hanger when said attachment is secured to said hanger, the length of said end runs being such as to dispose said bottom run below said pants receiving run when said member is secured to a hanger.

A pants holding attachment adapted to be used with a clothes hanger of the type having a horizontal pants receiving run and suspending means disposed thereabove, said pants holding attachment comprising a member having a bottom edge and a pair of side edges extending upwardly from said bottom edge, the upper end of said member being provided with means for pivotal attachment thereof to a hanger, the bottom edge of said 15 member being provided with an upwardly extending notch portion between the ends thereof, said notch portion being adapted to accommodate the stitching of a pants cufi, the bottom edge of said member being of a width to fit Within a pants cuff with the stitching of said cuff disposed within said notch, the sides of said member being of substantially the same length so as to dispose said bottom edge substantially parallel to the pants receiving run of a hanger when said attachment is secured to said hanger, the length of said sides being such as to dispose said bottom edge below said pants receiving run when 10 said attachment is secured to a hanger.
