` Claims. (Cl. 150-52) This invention relates to a novel cover for completely enclosing a lgolf bag .and including an end portion for enclosing the heads of golf clubs contained in the golf bag and which will afford a protective covering not only for the golf -clubs but'also for the entire bag.

More particularly, it is an aim of the present invention yto provide a covering of a pliable moistureand dust-proof material which will protect a golf bag and its contents from moisture and `dirt not only while the bag is being used but while the bag is stored, as for example ina locker orvehicle trunk.

A further object of the invention is to provide a golf bag cover which is so constructed that it may be readily applied to golf bags of different sizes without modification.

Still a further object of the invention is to provide a `cover the upper rend of which may be readily opened for removing clubs therefrom orv for applying clubs thereto while leaving the remainder of the bag covered or protected to prevent damage to the bag due to inclement weather conditions, ground moisture, or due to scuing or vmarring `of the bag which could otherwise occur without the protection of the cover.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawings, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:

Figure 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Figure l and looking from right to left of Figure l;

Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the cover taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure l showing the golf bag in elevation;

Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of the cover taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 4 4 of Figure 3 and on an enlarged scale;

Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view of a portion of the cover, taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 5 5 of Figure 3, and

Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational view of a portion of the cover looking toward the inner side thereof.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the improved golf bag cover in its entirety and comprising the invention is designated generally 8 and includes a body portion 9 which is preferably of one piece construction and formed from a pliable moistureand dust-proof material which is strong and durable, such as plastic, The body portion 9 is generally of cylindrical shape in cross section and includes a cylindrical wall 10 having closed ends 11 and 12. The end 11 constitutes the bottom of the cover 8 and the end 12 constitutes the top thereof. The upper end or top of the body portion 9 is preferably rounded as illustrated in the drawings and convex on its outer side.

one piece body portion 9 is shown provided with a slit 13 in the side wall 10 thereof the upper end of which communicates with a slit or opening 14 extending completely across the top 12. The side wall slit or opening 13 extends downwardly from one end of .the top opening 14 throughout a major portion of the length of the cylindrical wall 10. However, as the description proceeds it will become apparent that the length of the wall opening or slit 13 may be substantially reduced. The Wall opening or slit 13 .is normally closed by a flap 15 constituting a reinforcededgeof the wall 10 which overlaps an'inner reinforced edge 16 of the wal1v10, which edges 15 andt16 when separated form the wall opening or slit 13 and when arranged lin overlapping relationship, substantially close and seal said opening. The reinforced edges l5 and 16 are provided with separablesnap fastener sections, the mating sections of whichsnap fasteners 17 are arranged to be connected to the edges 15 and 16 are in overlapping relationship, as -illustrated in1Figure 4, for closing the slit or opening 13.

The slit or opening 14 which extends across the cover top 12 has one endconnected -with the upper end of the slit or opening 13 and is -normally closed by a conventional slide fastener 18, the slide `19 of which is located adjacent the upperend of the opening `13 and 'near the uppermost snap 4fastener 17, when the slide'fastener 18 is in a closed position, as seen in Figures 1 and 2.

The wall slit or opening13 is-shown extending -to -near the bottom 11 of the cover but it will be apparent as the description proceeds that the opening l13 can be reduced in length so that its lower end `will be disposed more remote from 'the cover bottom 11.

A portion of the wall V10 near 'to vbut spaced from the cover top 12 isv similarly provided with a strip vof 'elastic 23 twhich is secured around the Yinner side thereof in thesame manner by stitching 24 to provide an upper gathered ,portion 25.

For the purpose-of villustrating the use ofthe'coverf9, a conventional golf bag .26 has -been :illustrated equipped with the usual shoulder engaging carrying strap 27. To apply the cover 9 to the golf bag 26, all of the snap fasteners 17 are disengaged and the slide 19 is moved to the opposite end of the slide fastener 18 to open the cover top 12. The lower or bottom portion of the golf bag 26 is then inserted through the slit 0r opening 13 which is spread wide to receive the bag, and the bottom portion of the bag is moved into the bottom portion of the cover 9 or said cover 9 is drawn upwardly until its bottom 11 engages against the golf bag bottom. The lower gathered portion 22 will then be disposed above and near the bottom of the golf bag and will closely t therearound. Conventional golf bags are of uniform length and the cover 9 is of suicient length so that when the bag 26 is inserted therein the upper gathered portion 25 will be disposed adjacent the open upper end 23 of the bag. The fasteners 17 are then re-engaged for closing the wall opening 13 and the end portions of the carrying strap 27 extend through portions of said wall opening or slit 13 between adjacently disposed fastenets 17, which substantially close the slit 13 around said strap portions, as seen in Figure l. The cover 9 is of sufficient length so that when the slide fastener 1S is returned to a closed position the bulged cover top 12 will be disposed sufficiently above the open upper end of the bag 26 to accommodate the heads of golf clubs 29, which protrude from said open bag end 28, so as to enclose and protect the golf clubs as well as the golf bag 26. The upper gathered portion 25 will be disposed near the open upper end 28 of the bag 26.

As previously stated, golf bags are all of substantially uniform length so that the length of the cover 9 need not `be'varied for accommodating diierent golf bags. However, the diameters of golf bags vary considerably usually being between seven inches and twelve inches in diameter. However, the gathered portions 22 and 25 enables the cover 9 to be made suiciently large in diarneter to accommodate a golf bag of maximum diameter i and'will reduce the diameter of the wall 10 near its ends for adapting the cover 9 to golf bags of minimum diameter without modification. As previously stated, it will be readily apparent that the wall slit or opening 13'could terminate just below the lower portion of the strap 27 which extends therethrough but by making said strip 13 of greater length, the cover 9 may be more readily applied to and removed from the golf bag 26.

-It will be apparent that the cover 9 when applied to the golf bag 26 completely encloses the bag and the golf clubs contained therein and will not only protect the bag against moisture, dirt and dust while in use or while stored but will additionally protect the bag against being scratched or otherwise marred or damaged. The slide fastener 18 can be moved to an open position so that the clubs 29 may be removed from or applied to the golf bag 26 when the golf bag is in use and, if desired, with the slide fastener 18 open, the top portion 12 may be inserted into the open bag end 28 or folded back around the outer side thereof to provide more easy access to the clubs 29. If desired, the cover 9 may be formed of a transparent material so that the bag 26 and clubs 29 can be seen therethrough.

Various modiiications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

l. A golf bag cover having a cylindrical wall adapted to be disposed around a golf bag, said cover having a closed end forming the cover bottom adapted to be disposed beneath the golf bag bottom, said cylindrical wall having slit portions through which portions of a carrying strap of the golf bag are adapted to extend, said cover including a top portion adapted to be disposed beyond and spaced from the open top of the golf bag for accommodating and enclosing the heads of golf clubs contained in the bag, said top portion having an opening extending across a top part thereof, fastener means closing said opening of the top portion from end-tO-end thereof, said side wall having a slit forming an opening extending from one end of the opening of the cover top throughout a substantial portion of the length of said cylindrical wall and of which said slit portions form parts, whereby the cover may be opened completely across the top thereof and throughout a substantial portion of the length of the cover, and fastening means for closing said cylindrical wall opening.

2. A golf bag cover as in claim 1, said cover being of one piece construction and having reinforced overlapping edges forming and closing the cylindrical wall opening and to which sections of said last mentioned fastening means are secured.

A golf bag cover as in claim 2, said cover being formed of a relatively thin pliable moisture-proof and dust-proof material, and means forming gathered portions in said cylindrical cover wall, near the ends of said cover, and adapted for gripping engagement around the golf bag near the ends thereof for supporting the cover on the golf bag and for accommodating the cover to golf bags of different diameters.

A golf bag cover comprising an end portion form` ing a bottom, a second end portion forming a top and a cylindrical wall portion extending between said top and bottom portions adapted to fit around a golf bag, said cover top being adapted to be disposed beyond the open upper end of the golf bag and spaced therefrom, said cover having an opening extending longitudinally of the cylindrical wall portion throughout a substantial part of the length thereof and across said cover top, and fastening means for closing said cover opening.

5. A cover as in claim 4, and said cover having spaced openings therein when said fastening means is in a closed position adapted to accommodate portions of a carrying strap of the golf bag.
