Application May 18,1953, Serial No. 355,517
1 Claim. (Cl. 155-112) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in arm rests and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a portable arm rest and ash receptacle that may be placed on a couch, sofa, vehicle seat or the like in a convenient manner.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a portable arm rest having an opening, and an ash tray supporting arm swingably carried by the arm rest and movable into and out of the opening.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a portable arm rest that is extremely light in weight and which includes a flexible retainer strap having a weighted end that may fit behind a seat cushion to aid in retaining the arm rest in an upright position.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a portable arm rest and ash receiver that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, neat and attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention supported on a sofa;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the present invention and with parts thereof broken away, and with the dotted lines showing the ash tray holding arm swung to its unused position; and,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the invention and with dotted lines showing the holding arm in its used position.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral represents a substantially rectangular frame member having an upper portion 12, a lower portion 14 and forward and rear end portions 16 and 18.
A padding 20 is secured to the upper surface of the upper portion 12 by suitable means. One end of a flexible strap 22 is secured by fasteners or the like to the rear end of portion 14. The strap 22 is formed with a sleeve 24 at its free end that receives a cylindrical weight 26 which will fit behind a seat cushion C of a sofa S to retain the member 10 upright.
2,704,114 Patented Mar. 15, 1955 A combined pivot and brace 28 extends vertically between the upper and lower portions 12 and 14, and includes upper and lower coaxial rod sections 30 and 32 whose adjacent ends are provided with blind bores 34 and 36 that engage the ends of a dowel pin 38. Fasteners 40 secure the upper end of rod section 30 to upper portion 12 and fasteners 42 secure the lower end of rod section 32 to lower portion 14.
The inner end of a supporting arm 44 extends between the adjacent ends of rod sections 30 and 32 and is formed with an aperture receiving pin 38. The outer end of arm 44 supports a seat element or sleeve 46, that receives the body of an ash tray 48. The flanged portion 50 of ash tray 48 overlies the upper edge of sleeve 46.
The front portion 16 of member 10 is provided with a horizontal slot 52 that will accommodate arm 44 as the latter is swung horizontally forwardly to a position where the ash tray may be used. When the ash tray is not being used, the arm 44 is swung into the opening of member 10 to underlie portion 12.
In order that the arm rest will remain in proper position on a seat cushion, the flexible retainer strap 22 is of a width equal to the width of the arm rest and the length of the strap is substantially equal to the thickness of the cushion at the rear portion thereof.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A portable rectangular open frame having upper and lower portions and front and rear end portions and adapted to be stood on a seat cushion in upright position, an arm adapted to support an article on one end thereof, means pivotally mounting the other end of said arm in said frame adjacent said front end portion for horizontal swinging in opposite directions to position the same within the confines of said frame and to extend forwardly out of said frame, respectively, whereby to position said arm forwardly of said frame for use and within said frame in an out-of-the-way position when not in use, and a horizontal slot in said end portion for receiving said arm when the arm is swung to extend forwardly, said means comprising a pair of coaxial rods in said frame fixed to said upper and lower portions and having opposed ends spaced apart to accommodate said other end of the arm therebetween, and a pivot pin extending through said other end of the arm and into said opposed ends of the rods.
