K. T. BUTTERY COVERED COLLAPSIBLE TRIANGULAR CARTON Feb. 1, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed April 5 1950 Feb. 1, 1955 K. T. BUTTERY COVERED COLLAPSIBLE TRIANGULAR CAR TON 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 5, 1950 United States Patent COVERED COLLAPSIBLE TRIANGULAR CARTON Kenneth T. Buttery, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Southerland Paper Company, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Application April 3, 1950, Serial No. 153,744
1 Claim. (Cl. 229-22) This invention relates to improvements in covered collapsible triangular cartons.
The principal objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a covered triangular collapsible carton which is formed from a single blank, with the exception of the transparent window panel when a window is provided, and may be readily set up from collapsed position and when set up is quite rigid and secure even when formed of relatively light stock.
Second, to provide a covered collapsible carton of triangular form which is well adapted for packaging segments of bakery products and the like and in which the contents are effectively protected and at the same time exposed for inspection.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a closed carton embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view with the cover in partially closed position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the parts in partially erected position and particularly illustrating the hinging connections for the parts.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the carton fully collapsed.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank with one sealing flap and a portion of one cover side wall shown folded inwardly by full lines and in extended position by dotted lines, adhesive being indicated on the sealing flap.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a triangular body bottom 1 to which the rear wall 2 is hingedly connected as by the score line indicated at 3. The body side walls 4 and 5 are hingedly connected to the side edges of the bottom 1 as by the score lines 6. The body side wall 4 is provided with a sealing flap 7 which is adhesively secured to the inner side of the side wall 5. The side wall 4 has a diagonally disposed folding score 8 extending from the tip or apex of the bottom to the outer edge of the wall 4. The side wall 5 has a projecting tab or tongue 9 on its front or apex edge. The side walls 4 and 5 are provided with corner flaps 10 connected thereto by the hinging scores 11, these corner flaps being foldable on the inner side of the wall 2.
The triangular cover 12 is hingedly secured as by the score lines 13 to the upper edge of the body wall 2. In the structure illustrated, the cover has a window opening 14 therein which is extended into the wall 2 at 15. This window opening is provided with a transparent closure panel 16. The corner flaps 10 are cut away at 17 so as not to obstruct the window opening. The cover is provided with side walls 18 and 19 hingedly connected thereto by the score lines 20. The side wall 19 is provided with a sealing flap 21 which is adhesively secured to the inner side of the cover side wall 18. The cover side wall 19 is provided with a diagonal folding score at 22 extending from the apex of the cover. This diagonal folding scoring of the cover and body side walls permits the structure to be collapsed as shown in Fig. 5. By reference to Fig. 5 it will be noted that the body member and cover side walls having the diagonal scores therein are collapsible outwardly and that these diagonal scores are disposed on the opposite sides of the carton to prevent the side walls of the body member and cover from collapsing outwardly when the cover is in closed position over the body member.
When the side walls of the cover and body are erected, the cover may be swung over the body of the box with the apex of the cover retainingly engaged by the tab or tongue 9 as is shown in Fig. 4. To retain the side walls of the cover, that is to prevent their spreading outwardly, the side walls 4 and 5 of the box body have diagonal slits 23 extending across their lower rear corners and adapted to receive the lower rear corners of the cover, as is shown in Fig. 1.
With the parts thus arranged, they may be formed of a single blank as is illustrated, with the exception of the window closure and the side walls of the body and cover connected at their apex ends so as to permit the walls being collapsed as is shown in Fig. 5. However, when erected, the carton is quite strong and rigid, even when formed of light material, so that the contents are effectively protected. The carton is adapted for many uses but is particularly well adapted for bakery products. However, its segmental shape well adapts it for packing in circular shipping or delivery cartons.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other adaptations or embodiments which I contemplate, as I believe this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a covered collapsible triangular carton, a body member comprising a triangular bottom, a rear wall hingedly connected to the rear edge of the bottom, and side walls hingedly connected to the side edges of the bottom, one of the side walls having a sealing flap on its front end adhesively secured to the inner side of the other body side wall, said side wall having the sealing flap on its front end also having a diagonal folding score extending from the front end of the bottom to the outer edge of the side wall, one of said side walls having a projecting tongue on its front edge, said side walls having corner flaps hingedly connected to their rear ends and folclable on the inner side of the rear wall, a triangular cover hingedly connected to the upper edge of said rear wall, cover side walls hingedly connected to the side edges of the cover, one of said cover side walls having a sealing flap on its front end adhesively secured to the inner side of the other cover side wall, the cover side wall having the sealing flap having a diagonal folding score extending from the front end of the cover to the outer edge of the side wall, said cover side walls being closable over the body side walls, the side walls of the body member and cover having the diagonal hinge scores therein being collapsible outwardly, said diagonal scores being disposed on opposite sides of the carton to prevent collapsing of said body member and cover side walls outwardly when the cover is in a closed position over the body member, the body side walls having diagonal slits adjacent their lower rear corners receiving the lower rear corners of the cover side walls when the cover is closed, the upper ends of said diagonal slits terminating adjacent the hinged connections of said body side wall corner flaps to the body side walls, said tongue at the front end of one of the bottom side walls being in retaining engagement with the cover between the cover side walls at the vertex thereof when the cover is closed.
