MOLDING CANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
26,798, dated January 10, 1860.
To all whom it, may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. STANLEY, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented newand useful Improvements in Machines for Molding Candles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of "the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a top View Fig. 2 is a top view differing from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is an end view, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view.

' The nature of my invention. consists in the construction and arrangement of devices, by means of which, the butt, or large end of the candles, are cut from the sprue, and the sprue removed, and the candles discharged from the machine by means of the discharging rack, after the candles are out of the molds.
The molds A, are placed in the box 13, the large end being secured to, and terminating 1n the plate G, which forms the bot: tom of the sprue box.
Longitudinally, between the two rows of molds, as seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is a bar D, seen also in section in Fig. 4. The upper surface of this bar, is even with the upper surface of the plate C. To the upper side of this bar D, is attached, by means of screws or otherwise, a series of blades E, made of thin steel plate and having a cutting edge at a a in Fig. 2,.the bevel being parts in the lie in contact with the plate C, and top of molds A. The bar D, with the blades E, can be moved in the direction of the arrowin Figs. 1 and 2, a distance sufficient to cause them to pass over each pair of molds respectively, and in their passage they cutoff the butts of the candles even with the tallow from the bottom of the sprue box.
The sides of the sprue box, are formed by the pieces H H, and the bars G G in F g. 2. The bars G G are framed into the pleces H H and this forms a rectangular sliding frame G G H H, which is moved in the direction of the arrow (2) in Figs. 1 and 2. This movement is effected by means of the rack, (not shown in the drawings), placed upon the under side of the pieces H H, and the pinions J, upon the shaft K. This shaft K, is revolved by means of the crank L. This part of the apparatus, namely, the pieces G G and H H, forming the sides and ends of the sprue box, can be thus moved forward in the direction of the arrow (2) such a distance that the piece G moves entirely over the surface of the plate C, to the position of G, at the same time, bringing the piece G to the position of G, and in this manner, the entire contents of the sprue box is removed, by the movement of the sides and ends of the sprue box. In this movement,
the bar G presses closely upon the face of the plate 0, the blades E, being returned to the position shown in Fig. 2.
After the sprue box has been discharged of its contents, the candles are loosened from the mold in the usual manner, and secured in the candle rack M. This consists of two pieces N N, and the jaws O O O 0 each pair being pressed apart by the coiled springs P P, and brou ht more nearly into contact by the rods S S, cams Q, Q, and the connecting rod R, the different positions of the latter being seen in Fig. 2 at R and R, the position of the jaws O 0 being also indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. This candle rack M is hinged to upri ht pieces T, and supported in a horizontal position over the molds, by the support T, and when turned over for the purpose of discharging the candles, it rests upon the support T.
What I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the blades E,upon the bar D, for the purpose of cutting ofi the butts of the candles, and scraping the bottom of the sprue box.
2. I claim forming the ends and sides of the sprue box of the rectangular frame H H G G and removing the sprue tallow by means of the movement of this frame, as
specified.
