Description

(No Model.) V
P, T. GATES.
WASH BOARD.
No. 264,074. Patented Sept. 12, 1882.
IN V EBITOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PHlLEMON T. GATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WASH-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,074, dated September 12, 1882.
Application filed January 12, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PnILEMoN T. GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New 'York and ings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of reversible wash-boards in which a sheet-0f metal is corrugated or fluted transversely of its length and interwoven with woodenslats or bars in such a manner as to provide alternate rubbing-surfaces of wood and metal on both sides of the wash-board, as fully shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me under date of January3, 1882, and numbered 251,710, to which reference may be had for a more thorough understanding of my present improvements, which consist essentially in prowiding the metallic sheet which forms the base of the rubbing-surface with duplex corrugations adapted to receiveand securely hold the transversely-arranged-slats or bars throughout their entire length on both sides of the wash-board, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of myimprovements; Fig. 2, a detail sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 a modification thereof.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invention the frame of the wash-board is made,in the usual manner, with two parallel side pieces, A A, connected by cross-bars B, and provided with the soap receptacle 0 on each side of the same, asfully shown in Fig. 1. The metallic sheet D, which may be of zinc, galvanized wire-cloth of the requisite stiffness, or other non-corrosive material, is suitably corrugated or fluted transversely of its length in such a manner as to provide offsets or grooves cat the upper and (No model.)
lower edges of each corrugation, and the edges of the Wooden bars or slats E, conforming in shape thereto, are adapted to fit snugly therein, so as to be securely held transversely of their length, as fully shown in the drawings.
The bars or slats thus held locked or dovetailed within the metallic sheet D, so as to present alternate rubbing-surfaces of wood and metal on both sides of the wash-board, are set transversely in the frame, their ends resting in angular or irregular grooves in the standards Ain a manner well known.
The advantages of my invention will be readily seen without a more minute description, inasmuch as the wooden bars or slats, being held transversely-of their length within the offsets 01., are securely held in position and prevented from warping or springing out, thereby rendering the entire rubbing-surface stronger and more durable. v
By the formation of the duplex corrugated surfaces in the metallic sheets I) and the insertiou of the bars or slats E therein, there are formed cellsb at the offsets a, that addmate= rially to the irrigating-surfaces of the washboard, rendering the operation of washing more perfect and with much less pressure by the operator, While the manufacture of the wash-boards is greatly facilitated, in that after the metallic sheets D are formed the slats or bars E may be readily slipped in place and retained at pleasure preparatory to being placed within the frames to complete the same.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described wash-board, consisting of the wooden frame, a series of wooden slats, E, and the corrugated metallic sheet D, each corrugation of which has offsets a at the upper and lower edges thereof adapted to receive and hold the said bars or slats E transversely therein, the edges of said slats or bars corresponding in shape to said offsets, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILEMON TENN EY GATES.
