Description

Patented Dec. 30, 1952 sTooKING Arthur W. Vogel, Philadelphia, Pa., assgnor to Danita Hosiery Mfg. Co. Inc., Newark, Del., a
corporation of Delaware Application March 27, 1950, Serial No. 152,112
1 Claim. 1
In the manufacture of full fashioned stockings on flat knitting machines, the stocking blanks are provided with selvedges for receiving the seam which joins the edges of the stocking blank and, as far as I am aware, the thread used in knitting the selvedges and the seeming thread have always been of the same color as the color of the yarn used in knitting the stocking blank itself. This method of manufacture produced a stocking in which the back seam detracted from the attractive appearance of the stocking.
The object of this invention is to produce an improved stocking in which the back seam improves the appearance of the stocking.
A further object of the invention is to produce an improved method of making the improved stocking above referred to.
These objects are attained by my invention as set forth in the following specification and as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a stocking blank embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of a stocking formed of the blank shown in Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are similar to Figs. 1 and 2 but showing another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a stocking blank of the type produced on a conventional flat knitting machine. Except as hereinafter set forth, the blank may be produced of any desired yarn, having any desired denier and color, and of any desired stitch or combination of stitches.
In order to carry out my invention the sel vedges l of Figs. 1 and 2 and the selvedges I2 of Figs. 3 and 4 are made of a color which contrasts with the color of the stocking blank. For example, if the color of the finished stocking is to be a light brown or gray, the selvedges will be of black or brown or some other contrasting color.
This is done by introducing auxiliary carriers for feeding pre-dyed, dye-resisting yarn to form the selvedges so that, when the stocking is dyed and nished, the selvedges will still retain their initial color.
(Cl. (i6-179) 2 The selvedges are preferably joined together by thread of the same color as the yarn used in knitting the selvedges whereby the seam thus formed merges with, or is camoufiaged by the background aiorded by the joined selvedges. Where further contrast is desired, the seaming thread may be of a color diiferent from the color of the selvedge or diierent from the color of the selvedge and the stocking blank.
Also, the selvedges are preferably made somewhat wider so that, after they are seamed together, they will provide a clearly visible stripe as I4.
In the structure of Figs. 1 and 2, the differently colored selvedges extend the entire length of the blank and the resultant stripe extends from the top of the turned welt I6 to the end of the toe I8. In the structure of Figs. 3 and 4 the differently colored selvedges are formed along the leg portion only of the stocking blank and the resultant strip extends from the bottom edge 20 of the welt to the top edge or splice 22 of the heel.
What I claim is:
A full fashioned stocking the body of which is 'formed of yarn of one color and the selvedges of which are formed of yarn of a different color whereby when said selvedges are seamed together, a stripe of a color contrasting with the color of the body of the stocking is formed along the back seam of such stocking.
