One of the greatest anxieties or fears manifested by mothers, and others, in putting a diaper on an infant, is pricking of the infant with pins that fasten the diaper in place, or by the accidental opening of a pin.

Another exasperating experience is the misplacement, loss, or lack of a pin, or other fastening means, when desiring to put the diaper on the infant.

One of the principal obj-ects of this invention is to provide a diaper whereby no pins, or similar or separate fastening means, are required to change or put a diaper on the infant, thereby avoiding the aforementioned eventualities, but instead the diaper is so made that it may be easily and quickly put on the infant and fastened in place by means embodied within or forming a part of th-e diaper.

Another important object of this invention is to provide a diaper which is so made that if folded too small it may nevertheless be fastened in place and then enlarged to the desired extent and comfort of the infant without danger or possibility of any pin or fasteningmeans being opened or becoming unclasped.

A further important object of this invention is to provide an infants diaper which may be easily and economically fabricated.

With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, I have devised an infants diaper having certain novel features and arrangement of parts and portions, as willl be hereinafter described in detail, and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:

Fig. 1 is a developed View of an infants diaper shaped or cut in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 2 is a View thereof partly folded;

Fig. 3 is a View thereof wholly folded, as it appears when placed around an infants body, shown by dotted lines; and,

Fig. 4 is a developed View thereof in a slightly modified form.

One form of th-e infants diaper of my invention is shaped or cut substantially as shown in Fig. l. When applied to an infant it is folded about the folds designated A and B, forming a central section i and edge sections 2 and 3, the latter being designated flaps. When these flaps are folded inwardly about the fold lines A and B they provide overlying sections or layers, the

Near one end of the sheet, which corresponds also with the same end of each section or layer, is provided a plurality of openings which may be substantially in the form of slits. The openings in the central section l are designated Ia and ib, those in the section, layer or flap 2 are designated 2a and 2b, and those in the section, layer or flap 3 are designated 3a and 3b. These are all arranged in the same row near the upper end of the sheet. lThe openings or slits la and 2a are arranged adjacent the fold A. The openings or slits ib and 3b are arrange adjacent the fold B. The opening or slit 2b is 'located adjacent the free edge of the section, layer or flap 2, while the openingor slit 3a is located near the free edge of the section, layer or flap 3.

The sections, layers or flaps 2 and 3 are provided, respectively, with tie strings 4 and 5 at the lower ends, that is, the ends opposite those provided with the openings. These tie strings taper gradually towards the free ends and extend angularly from approximately the middle portions of these sections towards their free edges. The bottom edge E of the sheet is cut on a wide curve, forming the lower edge of the central section I and the inner edges of the tie strings. The free edges of the sections, layers or flaps 2 and 3 have curved cutout portions 'l and 8 which form the outer edges of the tie strings, substantially as shown.

When the diaper is folded about the folds A and B, the article assumes a shape substantially as shown in Fig. 2. It is then reversed and the tie strings nl and 5 are drawn upwardly and threaded through the openings at the upper end of the sheet. The tie string Il is threaded, respectively, through the openings lb, 2b, and 3b, while the tie string 5 is threaded, respectively, through the openings I2, 2a, and 3a. They may be then tied by means of a single loop or knot, as indicated in Fig. 3.

In the modified form, as shown in Fig. 4, the shape or cut is substantially the same except that the end sections 9 and l0 are slightly narrower than the end sections 2 and 3, and the openings or slits at the free edges of these sections or flaps are omitted.

I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact arrangement shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

I claim:

1. An infants diaper, comprising a flexible sheet foldable with its opposite edges inwardly to forni a plurality of overlying layers of the sheet, all of the layers having at one end and adjacent their mutual folds openings registering when the layers are folded, the edge layers having at the ends thereof opposite the first mentioned ends integral gradually tapered tie strings at each edge, the string of each edge layer extending diagonally across the front of the diaper and being adapted, when the folded diaper is folded at a right angle, to be threaded through the regis.. tering openings in the other edge layer and center layer.

2. An infants diaper, comprising a exible sheet foldable with its opposite edges inwardly to form a plurality of overlying layers of the sheet,

all of the layers having at one end and adjacenttheir mutual folds registering openings, the edge layers having at the ends thereof opposite the rst mentioned ends integral, gradually tapered,V angularly extending, tie strings diverging outwardly and downwardly, the string of each edge layer, when the folded diaper is folded at a right angle, extending diagonally across the front of the diaper and aligring with and being insertalole through the registering openings in the other edge layer and center layer.

An infants diaper, comprising a flexible sheet foldable along twoveritcal lines to form three overlying layers of the sheet, one center and two edge layers, all of the layers having openings at one' end of the sheet and adjacent the folds registering when the layers are in folded condition, the edge layers having at the ends thereof opposite the first mentioned end integral, gradually tapered, diverging tie strings at each edge, each tie string extending diagonally across the front of the diaper and being adapted, when the folded diaper is folded at a right angle, to automatically align with and to be threaded through the registering holes in the otherV edge layer and center layer.

4; An infants diaper, comprising a flexible sheet foldable along two vertical lines with'its opposite edges inwardly to form three overlying layers' of the sheet, the layers having at one end and adjacent their mutual folds openings registering when the sheet is folded, each edge layer having adjacent its, free vertical edge another opening capable of registering with the opening in the other edge layer adjacent its fold, the edge layers having at the ends thereof opposite the rst mentioned ends gradually tapered tieV strings at each edge adapted, when the foided diaper is folded at a right angle, to said vertical lines, to extend diagonally across the folded sheet and to extend through the registering holes in the other edge layer, center layer, and the opening located at the free vertical edge of the saine layer.

An infants diaper, comprising a sheet of foldable material having a substantially rectan- Cil gular central section and a side ap at each side of the central portion, said section and flaps being defined by parallel, vertical fold lines, said sheet being foldable along said lines to provide a three-ply diaper with said ap-s disposed against said central section, said section and said naps having openings disposed adjacent the upper end of the sheet and said fold lines and adapted to register when the sheet is folded along said lines, the lower Yportion of each flap being of reduced wid-th and terminating' in `an integral, tapered tie tape, said tie tapes diverging downwardly and outwardly and crossing each other when the sheet is folded along said fold lines, each of said tapes Vbeing directed toward and insertable through said 4registering openings at an upper corner of the folded sheet when the latter is folded back upon itself alongV alV fold line extending normal to the rstenientioned fold lines.

An infants diaper, comprising a sheet of foldable material having a substantially rectangular central section and a side ap at each side of the central portion, said section and ilaps being defined 'oy parallel, vertical fold lines, said sheet being foldahle along said lines to provide a threeply diaper with said flaps disposed against said central section, said section and said flaps having openingsl disposed adjacent the upper end of the sheet and said fold lines and adapted to register when the sheet is folded along said lines, the lower portion of each flap being of reduced width and terminating in an integral, tapered tie tape, extending below and laterally outwardly from the central section, said tie tapes diverging downwardly and outwardly and crossing each other when the sheet is folded along said fold lines, each of said tapes being directed toward and insertalole through said registering openings at an upper corner of the folded sheet when the latter is folded back upon itself along a fold line extending normal to the rst-inentioned fold lines. 7. An infants diaper as defined in claim 6 in which said side flaps have curved cut-away outer vertical edges, said cut-away edges providing leg openings conforming substantially to the contour of the legs of an infant.
