F. M. TAYLOR.
BRAGKET AND SHELVING SUPPORT.
Patented Mar. 28
INVENTOIR i ATTORNEYS WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. TAYLOR, OF MACON CITY, MISSOURI.
BRACKET .AND SHELVING SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,695, dated March 28, 1882.
Application filedJanuary 28, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Macon City, in the county of Macon and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bracket and Shelving Supports 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the constructionand operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. a V
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the upright. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the bracket. Fig. 4 is a perspective ofthe same, and Fig. 5 is arear view of the same.
Thisinvention has relation to portable and adjustable shelving; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the rib-support having wall-bearin gs, and a series of transverse pin-seats in rear of a smooth continuous front edge, of the bracket forked at its rear end to embrace the rib-support, and of the edge notches in the bracket designed to engage pins or screws in the shelf to prevent warping, all as hereinafter show'n'and set forth.
i In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the rib-support of the wall-upright, which is to be placed against the wall, so that its hearing or bearings a will be in contact therewith. Perforations b are made through the hearings for the passageof the wall-screws o. The front edge, d, of the rib-support is smooth and continuous, forming an unbroken bearing for the rear end of the bracket B. In rear of this smooth front bearing is a series of pin-seats, 6, each of which extends transversely, as shown.
The bracket B is formed with a horizontal bearing,-f, for the shelf, said bearing being strengthened by a central under rib, g, which extends back and joins the vertical rear hearing, it, of the bracket, which is at right angles to the shelf-bearing f. This rear bearing is forked or provided with cheek-flanges k,which extend to the rear and are placed at the proper distance apart to embrace the upright ribbearing.
securely thereto after it has been adjusted to the height required. The rear bearing, h, of the bracket is made long enough to form a brace at the lower end, m, said bearing being in contact, wholly or partially, with the continuous front edge of the upright support. When the pins 1) are withdrawn the bracket can be adjusted to any height required and then secured in place by replacing the pins.
The uppermost bracket may be made with a crane-extension, 1", of its under rib, having at its end a curved bearing, 8, for a rod, t, which is used in dry-goods stores to display goods over the counter. This crane-extension may be either straight or curved.
In order to prevent the shelves from warping, notches n are formed in the edges of the horizontal bearingf, for the reception of pins or screws 11, which are fastened in the under side of the shelf.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The wall-upright having the rib-support A in front of the wall-bearings a, transverse pin-seats e in rear of the front edge, cl, of the rib-support, and the bracket B, having the rear hearing, it, provided with perforated cheekflanges It, in combination with'the transverse holding-pinsp, substantially as specified.
2. The bracket B, having the horizontal bcaringf, notched at n, the underrib, g, the vertical rear bearing, h, and the perforated cheekflanges 70, substantially as specified.
3. The shelf-bracket having the bracing under rib, g, extended in front to form a cranebearing, r s, for the display of goods over a counter, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS MARION TAYLOR.
