WINDOW LATCH Filed June 18, 1948 Patented Feb. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDOW LATCH Neil 0. Holmsten, New Rochelle, N. Y.
Application June 18, 1948, Serial No. 33,783
1 Claim. l
This invention relates to latches for hinged windows and more particularly to a latch having locking means to prevent the same from being released by unauthorized persons.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved latch of the above type.
Another object is to provide a latch for casement windows which cannot be released by unauthorized persons when the window pane is broken.
Various other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed.
The novel features which are characteristic of this invention will be better understood by referring to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which a specific embodiment thereof has been set forth for purposes of illustration.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a window latch embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the invention is shown as applied to a latch for a easement window including a sash l which is hinged to swing outwardly in a window frame I I. The latch comprises a base plate I2 which is of circular form and is attached to the window sash I0 by means shown as attaching screws I3. The base plate I2 is provided on one side with a locking ear I4 which extends outwardly therefrom for the purpose to be described.
A shaft I5 is journaled to rotate in the base plate I2 and carries a latch arm I5 which is secured thereto and is adapted at one end to engage a keeper ll which is permanently attached to the window frame Il, and at the other end is provided with a handle I8 for actuation purposes. The arm I5 extends over the locking ear I4 and the ear i4 and arm I5 are provided with aligned holes I9 and 20 to receive a padlock 2|. or the like, for locking the arm I6 in latched position.
A keeper I'l is provided with the usual plate 25 which is attached to the window frame II by suitable means, as by screws 26.`
The shaft I5 also carries a screw guard 30 which rotates with the shaft and with the latch arm I6 and is adapted to cover the screws I3 when the anni I5 is in latching position. The screw guard 30 is provided with spaced peripheral notches 3l which in certain positions of the screw guard provide access to the screw heads for attachment purposes. Such access, however, is only provided when the screw guard is turned with the latch arm from latching position.
It will be noted that in the above-described device, when the padlock 2| is in place, the arm I6 cannot be actuated for releasing the window latch, nor can the attaching screws I3 be removed due to the presence of the screw guard 30. When the padlock 2I is removed, however, the latch may be actuated in the usual manner for latching or opening the window.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown for purposes of illustration, it is to be understood that various changes and modications may be made therein as will be apparent to a person skilled in the art.
What is claimed is:
A window latch comprising a base plate having spaced holes to receive attaching screws and having a locking ear extending outwardly from one side thereof parallel to, but raised above the level of said base plate, a shaft journaled for rotation in said base plate, a latch arm attached to said shaft for rotation therewith, said latch arm having one end adapted to engage a keeper for latching said window and having its other end eX- tending over said locking ear, said locking ear and said arm having aligned holes to receive a padlock or the like for locking the same against unauthorized movement.
