CHILD'S SLEEPING GARMENT Filed Dec. 23, 1946 R957 W Wilson M Q E Patented Nov. 7, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHILDS SLEEPING GARMENT Roy W. Wilson, Oak-Park, Ill.
Application December 23, 1946, Serial No. 717,848
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a new and. improved childssleeping garment of a coverall type which is preferably made of woolen blanket material and is usually selected large enough in size to permit putting it over its regular pajamas -to take the place of ordinary blankets, the thought being that an active child is quite apt to kick off covers during the night, and Will-thus be'left Without covers and catch cold, the coverall not only affording the desired warmth at all times, but also eliminating the ever present risk of strangulation which occurs all too often with tied-down-or tied around the body coverlets and garments of other designs.
A salient feature of the garment of my invention is the provision of a two-way zipper extending the full length of the back down to the .crotch and through the crotch and upwardly in front approximately to the waist, thus permitting opening only the front or the whole lower portion of the garment by operating one of the slidable fasteners when that is desired, as when the child goes or is taken to the toilet during the night, or opening'the entire back of the garment and up the front with the other slidable fastener as when putting the garment on or taking it off, the two slidable fasteners being both easily operable by the parent, whereas the child can operate only the one slidable fastener on the front of the garment, the other being out of the childs reach on the back of the neck, thus eliminating any likelihood of the child uncovering itself during the night. a
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figs. 1 and 2 are front and rear views of a child wearing a sleeping garment made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 3 is a slightly smaller rear view of the garment by itself shown opened up all the way by sliding the rear slidable fastener down the back and up the front to a position alongside the other slidable fastener, thus illustrating how easily the garment may be put on or taken off the child by the parent, although when it is being worn the child cannot unfasten and'remove it, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 1, the lower portion of the right leg of the garment being also shown in vertical section to better illustrate the construction.
The same reference numerals are applied to corresponding parts throughout the views.
The sleeping garment or coverall of my invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 5 and is preferably -made of woolen blanket material 6, and is usually put on the child over its regular pajamas, which are of the usual kind with buttons or other suitable closures as indicated in dotted lines at in Fig. 4. This garment ii, in other words, is intended to take the place 'of ordinary blankets and solve the problemof keeping thechild. covered through the night in'a cool or cold room "by making it impossible for the child to remove its coveringand even its pajamas in whole or part. It also eliminates'the risk of strangulation, which, as'is well known, occurs with tied down or tied around the body coverlets and garments of other designs. Each arm portion 8 is formed from a single piece of the blanket material-'5 with a longitudinally extending seam 9 along the inner side. Each body section It is formed from two pieces of the blanket material 6 for the front and back of the garment joined lengthwise of the leg portions II by the seam 12 on the inner side and lengthwise of the body and leg portions by a seam 13 on the outer side, there being diagonally extending seams M joining the inner ends of the arms a to the upper portion of the body at the shoulders giving a raglan sleeve effect. The lower end portions of the legs are extended to form upper foot coverings [5, there being bottom pieces I 6 preferably of the same blanket material which are sewed to the lower edge portions of the legs II with bindings ll. Small V- shaped openings is are left at the lower ends of the seams I2 and 13 above the bottoms It for ventilation. The two body sections of the garment 5 are joined together at the middle of the front by a vertical seam !9 extending from the neck 20 down to about the waist. A single long zipper 2| having two slidable fasteners 22 and 23 is provided extending downwardly in the front from the waist and rearwardly through the crotch and all the way up the back to the neck to form a closure for the garment, this two-way zipper having these advantages:
(1) The slidable fastener 22 can be operated by the child or parent and used to open only the lower front portion of the garment or the whole lower portion as indicated by the two dotted po-v sitions of fastener 22, this being necessary when the child goes or is taken to the toilet, and, even though the child can work this fastener 22 up and down, it cannot open the garment any farther, and, therefore, there is no danger of the child getting the outer blanket garment off and even removing part or all of the pajamas therebeneath and being left uncovered and catching cold;
(2) The other slidable fastener 23, being located at the back of the neck, is not accessible to the child, but is easily operable only by the parent in putting the garment on the child or taking it off, thus positively eliminating any danger of the child removing the outer garment and part or all of the inner garment and suffering from exposure, and
(3) The single two-way zipper 21 extending from the neck down to the crotch and through the crotch and up the front of the garment to the waist facilitates putting on and taking off the garment, as should be clear from Fig. 3, and it also simplifies the production of the garment in the first instance.
4 downwardly in front, the other slider being operable only by the parent from the back of the neck downwardly whereby the child cannot open enough of the outer garment to suffer exposure or gain access to the closures on the pajamas to open the same.
2. A childs coverall type sleeping garment of the character described, comprising right and left half-garment sections, each providing body, arm, and'separate full length leg-covering portions on the opposite sides of a crotch portion, said right and left half-garment sections having adjacent edges separably connectible together substan-' It is believed the foregoing description conveys I agood understanding of the objects and'advantages of m invention. The appended claims have been drawn to cover all legitimate modifications and adaptations.
I claim:
1. A blanket coverall type of garment for use by a child over a suit of pajamas, as a substitute for a blanket, or blankets, said coverall garment being loose fitting and made of warmth giving blanket material designed to be worn over the aforesaid pajamas and comprising right and left half-garment sections, each providing body, arm, and separate full length leg-covering portions, said right and left half-garment sections being joined together at the front only of the bodycovering portions from the waist upwardly and defining therebetween a neck opening at the top that is closed in the frontbut open at the back, the body portions having a rear opening longitudinally from the neck down to the crotch and through the crotch and up the front partway to the neck, and a two-way zipper comprising two strips carrying meshing elements extending the full length of the aforesaid rear opening, crotch opening and front opening, and two sliders disposed on said strips each cooperating with sections of both of said meshing elements, said sliders being both operable in either direction, the one being operable by either the child or the parent to open only the lower front portion or more of the lower portion by operation of said slider 'the back of the body portion substantially to the neck, cooperating slide fastener elements attached along each of said adjacent edges, and two independently operable slidable connectors cooperating with said fastener elements to close and open the garment, one of said slidable connectors serving to open only the crotch portion of the garment in front from the waist down to the crotch portion and as much farther rearwardly and then upwardly in the back portion as desired, and the other of said slidable connectors, which serves to open the garment, being substantially inaccessible to a child when in its fully closed position at the back of the neck and being inoperable b the child wearing the garment, said slidable connector in the opening of the garment being movable down the back to the crotch portion and as much farther forwardly and then upwardly in the front portion as desired.
