Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. JOLLY, OF OLEAN, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Speceation of Letters Patent No. 25,123, dated August 16, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. JOLLY, of Olean, in the county of Ripley and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in I/Vashing-Machines, and hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention consists in an arrangement of sliding table operated by a treadle, in combination with a revolving rubber for the purposes hereinafter explained.
In'the accompanying drawings my invention is represented as follows:
Figure l, is a. side elevation of themachine. Fig. 2, is a plan of the same.
A represents the washing tub supported on legs B.
I C is a sliding table having lugs c projecting downward which lugs are fitted s0 as to Slide upon rods a in mortises or slots in the sides of the tub. The rods a are made somewhat shorter than the mortise so as to permit the removal of the table C.
D is a revolving rubber journaled within the tub. The surface of the rubber is corrugated transversely and made in segments so as to admit of being removed and renewed.
On the front of the sliding table is a concave (shown in dotted lines in Fig. l) projecting downward, and nearly concentric with the rubber. This concave holds the portion of clothes which is being washed in contact with the rubber, the other portion resting upon the table.
M is a hinged fender or cover over the rubber which prevents the water from being thrown out of the tub while the machine is in use and admits of being turned back to give access to the rubber.
E is a crank shaft having a bearing in the yolke F and also in a box on the top of the tu G is a cog Wheel secured upon the crank shaft and working into the pinion H on the rubber shaft by means of which motion is imparted to the rubber.
I is a treadle attached to and vibrating with the shaft J in bearings in the legs B.
K are cords connecting the sliding frame on each side to the treadle I by means of a transverse bar N.
L are friction rollers over which the cords pass.
This machine is so constructed and arranged that the pressure of the clothes against the rubber is produced entirely by the foot acting on the treadle, and is readily increased or diminished as occasion may require. The clothing which is under action is constantly exposed to view, and the left hand left free to manipulate it so as to pre sent successive portions to the rubbing and compressing action. The arrangement also admits of the very ready removal of the clothes from either side of the machine.
I claim as new and of my invention, herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The described arrangement and combination of the treadle I sliding table C and rotary rubber D, the whole being constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS J. JOLLY.
