A. A. MANDELL.
- IMUGILAGE HOLDER. L No. 250,671. Patented Deo.13,188.1.
W277: 644424 In rm far.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT A. MANDELL, OF HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
MUCI LAGE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,671, dated December 13, 1881.
Application filed November 26, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ALBERT A. MANDELL, of Hyde Park, county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mucilage-Holders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in mucilage holders or boxes having a hinged lid or cover; and it consists of the employment of jointed arms hinged to the body of the box, and to the lid or cover, and operating so that when the boxis opened the arms will form a support to hold the lid in a horizontal position, so that it may be used as a table upon which labels or other articles may be laid while applying the mucilage or paste.
It further consists in the use of two arms or brackets, which may be made of wire, and secured to the inside of the box in such a position as to form a convenient scraper to remove a portion of the paste, and thus prevent it from dripping from the brush.
The arrangement and manner of operating my invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view, showingmy improved mucilage-box as it appears when opened ready for use.
A is the box, the cover B being hinged thereto, as shown. The link a of the jointed arm is permanently secured to the back of the box with a hinged joint, as shown at a, while the arm b may be spread at its ends and joined to the lid near its front edge with two hinged joints, 1) b. The link ais of a length to bring the joint a to the top of the box, or in line with the hinges of the lid, and the link I) is of a length to support the lid in a horizontal position, when opened, with the joint a resting on a plane with the bottom of the box.
0 d are brackets, made of round wire and secured to the inside of the box, the one, (1, being placed above the other, 0, at a sufficient distance apart to admit the paste-brush between the two. The opening 6 embraces the handle of the-brush, so as to admit the closing of the lid. The wires 0 d are placed at a sufficient distance apart to admit the brush between the two when it is held at an angle near to the horizontal, while, it it is raised to an angle approaching the perpendicular, the wires will impinge one upon either side of the brush, and as the brush is withdrawn in this position the wires will act as scrapers to remove the surplus matter from the brush.
It is obvious that the severity of the impingement of the wires against the brush is determined by the angle at which the brush is held when it is withdrawn, thus enabling the operator to load the brush light or heavy, as the nature of the work may require.
I am aware that elastic Wires or springs placed within a box so as to scrape the brush when it is forced between their elastic surfaces have heretofore been used; also, that the use of the inner side of the cover to support the paper while applying the paste is not new; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A mucilage holder or box having ajointed arm hinged to the lid and to the back of the box, and arranged, substantially as described, so as to lie close to the box when it is closed, and to be made to extend by opening the lid, so that when fully opened that part of the arm secured to the lid will form an upright support for the lid, with its lower end resting on a plane with the bottom of the box, substantially as shown and set forth.
ALBERT A. MANDELL.
