' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. O. KNAUFF, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED PIECE OF FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,696, dated March 8, 1881.
Application filed August 17, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. G. KNAUFF, a citizen of the free city of Hamburg, Gen many, and a resident of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Pieces of Furniture, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the combined pieces of furniture embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the lid J turned down, with the extension K attached, forming a table.
bimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of certain improvements in combined wardrobe, bedstead, and other pieces of furniture, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a The side pieces, a, of the wardrobe are extended rearward of the back board or wall I), so as to form a space, a, within which the bedstead may' be folded from the rear, said bedstead being hinged to a piece, 0, rising from the base of the wardrobe, and connected to the ends of the extended side pieces, a. The wardrobe has a top shelf, g, hooks or -pins h, and a bottom shelf, It. The top board, m, of the wardrobe space is below the top proper, so that above said top exists or is formed an offset, a, into which the foot-board p of the bedstead is folded, as seen in Fig. 2.
To one side of the wardrobe is secured a towel-rack, F, and a washstand, G, and to the face of the door A is connected a mirror, H. To the door A is also connected the case J of a writing-desk andthe lid J thereof, so disposed that when the lid is let down it uncovers the pigeon-holes and other parts of the desk, and when closed covers said parts the lid then being flush with the door A, of which it is a part. When the lid is down or unfolded its outer end will be supported by a removable foot, K, which is connected to a section, K, of a table, said section having dowels q, adapted to enter openings rin the lid J. The section K thus forms an extension of the lid J, and provides a dining-table, (see Fig. 3,) which is supported at one end by the connec- No model.)
by the foot K. When the lid is down its hinged end abuts against the bottom of the 3 case J, and is thus assisted in being sustained, a feature serviceable when the lid is used for writing purposes without the foot K and tablesection K, these latter when not required being placed within the wardrobe on the shelf It.
On the back of the door is secured a hook, on which may be hung a folding chair, L, (shown in section, Fig. 2, and dotted in Fig. 1,) and the space below the shelf may be employed as a receptacle for a liootj-ack, shoes, 85c.
The offset a, in addition to receiving the foot-board of the bedstead, is sufficiently large for storing various articles.
The bottom of the wardrobe is provided with drawers 8, and the door A with a shelf or mantel-piece, t, projecting from the base of the mirror H.
The bedstead and adjacent parts of the wardrobe will form part of another application; hence the improvements therein are not now claimed. The construction of said parts is, however, described and illustrated in the drawings, because their elimination from the case would leave the remainder thereof in a fragmentary condition, and would not afford a good idea of the article of manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The wardrobe-door A, having on its inner face an immovable case, J, said case being formed with a hinged lid, J, which constitutes a part of said door, but which may be turned down outwardly independently of said case and said door, so as to form a table-top, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the table-legsK and detachable top section K, having fasteningpins q, the wardrobe-door, having on its inner face an immovable case, J, said case -being formed with ahinged lid, J, which constitutes a part of said door, but which may be turned down outwardly independently of said case, and attached to section K, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES F. o. KNAUFF.
