ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 16, 1945 GARMENT Joseph A. Rosehill, Detroit, Mich., assigner to American Lady Corset Company, Detroit, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Application June 15, 1942, Serial No. 447,128
' (c1. z -3o) 3 Claims.
The invention relates to garments and refers more particularly to combination garments comprising upper and lower dress elements which together form a figure molding or form retain'- ing garment.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide an improved garment which may be formed of non-elastic material, which has a high degree of flexibility and which may be readily and quickly applied and removed.
The invention has for other objects toprovide a garment in which the lower dress element has separable sections secured to each other by adjustable -tie means terminating below their upper edges providing for flexibility or adjustability and by other means above the adjustable tie means predeterminedly controlling the size of the upper edge portion of the lowerdress element to t the lower edge portion of 'the upper dress element of the combination garment; to provide a garment in which the means for securing the separable sections of the lower dress element together above the adjustable tie means is a quick detachment means for facilitating the opening of the upper edge portion of the lower dress element; and to provide an improved construction of lower dress element having its upper edge portion definitely controlled as to size and its lower portion adjustable.
The invention has for a further object to secure the upper dress element to the lower dress element in a manner such that the former overlaps the latter at the outer side thereof and conceals the quick detachment means of the lower dress element and provides ready and quick access to the quick detachment means.
With these as well as other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combination garment showing an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the upper dress element of the garment opened;
Figures 3 and 4 are cross sections on the lines 3-3 and 4 4, respectively, of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing a modified lower dress element;
Figure 6 is a' cross section on the line 6 6 of Figure 5;
Figure '7 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing another modified lower dress element;
Figure 8 is a cross section on the line B-B of Figure 7; A
Figure 9 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing another modified lower dress element;
Figure 10 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing another modified lower dress element;
Figure 11 is a cross section on the line II-II of Figure 10.
The combination gure molding or form retaining garment of Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, comprises the upper and lower dress elements l and 2, respectively, and as shown, the upper dress ele-` ment is a brassire Vand the lower dress element is a girdle, the brassire being of the side-opening type and the girdle of the front-opening type.
The brassire preferably overlaps the upper portion of the girdle at the outer side thereof and is detachably and adjustably secured to the girdle at both the front and rear of the garment by means'including the tapes 3. The tapes extend downwardly from the brassire along the outer side of the girdle, then through the openings 4 in the girdle and then downwardly along the inner side of the girdle to be engaged by suitable fasteners which are preferably buttons 5 upon the inner side of and secured to the girdle. The lower end portions of the tapes are provided with a plurality of button holes to provide for adjustment of the brassire longitudinally of the girdle.
The brassire has the front sections 6 and 1 each'of which is provided with a breast receiving pocket. The front section l borders the side opening and its side edge portion has secured thereto the hooks 3 for detachably engaging the eyes 9 secured to the side edge portion of the adjacent rear section lll, the arrangement providing for quick detachment of the front section l from the rear section I0, I
The girdle 2 has the front sections Il and I2 which may be provided with suitable stays and these front sections border the front opening. I3 is lacing extending-between the front sections Il and l2 from the lower edges thereof to a zone spaced below the upper edges thereof, the lacing providing for flexibility or adjustability of the girdle. To secure the upper portions of the front sections Il and l2 above the lacing to each other and to predeterminedly control the size ci the upper edge portion of the girdle to fit or adapt the same to the overlapping lower edge portion of the brassire, there is provided the inextensible tab M and the button l5. The tab extends laterally from the side edge of the front section Il over the front section I2 at the outer side section l2 at the outer side thereof. The button hole in Ithe tab is predeterminedly located, as is also the button, so that the size of the upper edge portion of the girdle is denitely controlled and can not be increased to an extent preventing the use of the brassire. The tab and button securing means provides for quick detachmentof the upper edge portions of the front sections of the girdle.
The tapes 3 for securing the rear sections of the brassire and girdle together and also for securing the front sections 6 and II of the brassire and girdle together are preferably stitched to the brassire. However, the tape k3 for securing the front sections I and I2 of the brassire and girdle together is secured to the front section I in a manner to provide for quick detachment. As shown, the front section 'l has stitched theretoat the inner side thereof thetape I 6 which is provided with a longitudinally extending button hole for receiving the button Il upon the associated tape 3. Thel tape I6 is preferably stitched to the front section I at the lower and .upper edges and one side edge'toprovide for access to the button I'I.
Both the brassire andthe girdle may be completely formed of inelastic material or fabric, and in the present instance suchmaterial is employed, except for the elastic gussets 2' lin the lower edge portion of the girdle.
The arrangement is such that the brassire extends downwardly over the girdle a distance such that when the garment is in use the brassire conceals the tab I 4, buttons t5 and Il, and.V the upper portion of the lacing I3 so that a neat and pleasing appearance results The arrangement is also such that if it is desired to remove thel garment the hooks 8 and 9 may be readily and quickly detached and the front section 1 of the brassire swung over to an intermediate position to enable unfastening the button. I1 fromthe. tape I5, after which the front section 'I may be further swung over to a position such as indicated in Figure 2 to expose the tab I4 and button I to enable quick detachment of the button from the tab. The upper portion of the girdle is now free to be opened so that after the shoulder straps are moved downwardly over the shoulders and the lacing loosened, the garment may be removed by sliding the same downwardly. It is apparent that the construction is also such that the garment may be readily applied with the assurance that the girdle and brassire will fit each other.
The construction of garment illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 is generally the same as that illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, but diners only in the construction of the girdle, ab`ove the lacing I8. In detail, the front section I9 of the girdle has the tab 29 extending laterally from the side edge of the front section over the front section 2i at the outer side thereof and detachably engaging the button 22 secured to the front section 2l. The front section 2l also has extending laterally` therefrom the tab 2.3 which extends over the front section I9 at the outer side thereof and detachably engages the button 24 secured to the iront section i9. In this case, the garment may be removed and applied in the same manner as the garment of Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, it being necessary to detach two buttons from their tabs instead of one button from its tab.
The modication of Figures '7 and 8 also differs only in the construction of the upper edge portion of the girdle above the lacing 25. In detail, the
As shown in Figure 9, the garment is of the same construction as that illustrated in Figures l to 4, inclusive, with the exception that the upper edge portions o f the girdle sections 33 and 34 are adapted to be secured together in one of a pair of predetermined relations, in either of which the upper edge portion of the girdle is predeterminedly sized to t the lower edge portion of the brassire. Indetail, 35 is an inextensible tab extending laterally from the side edge of the front section 33 above, the lacing and 36 is the button secured to the front section 34. The tab is provided with the two button holes 3l and 3B for receiving the button and providing for adjustment in the size of the upper edge portion of the girdle to receive the brassire.
Figures 10 and 11, illustrate another garment in-which the girdle 39 differs from the girdles previously described in that Vits front sections are additionally provided with quick detachment securing means which may be unfastened so that the lacing need not be loosened. In detail, the girdle has the front sections All and Il! inwhich the section 0 has the longitudinal main portion 42 and the longitudinally extending-strip portion 43 secured together at their adjacent edges` by quick detachment means which, as shown, comprises the clasps 44 extending Vdownwardly from the upper edges and the hooks and eyes i5 extending upwardly from the lower edges. -46 is lacing between the front sections and, more particularly, the front section 4I and the strip d3, the lacing terminating below the upperedge of the girdle. 41 is an inextensible tab secured to the outer side of the main portioni2v and extending laterally over the strip portion E3 and a portion of the iront section 4| andV having a button hole for receiving the button 48 which is secured to the outer side of the front section 4I. The tab is located above the lacing and is concealed by the brassire 49 when the garment is being worn. The tab and button predeterminedly controly the size of the upper edge portion of the girdle to t the lower edge portion ofy the brassire.
The construction is such that if it is desired to remove the garment, the hooks and eyes' of the brassire may be readily and quicklydetached, after which the front section of the brassiren adjacent the side opening of therbrassire may be swung over to enable unfastening the button 5I] from the tape 5I which correspond respectively to the button Il and the tape I6 of Figures 1 to 4, inclusive. Then this front section of the brassire may be swung over to a position such as indicated in Figure l() to expose the tab 41 and the button 48 to enable quick detachment of the button from the tab, after which the quick detachment meanscomprising theclasps 44 and the hooks and eyes 45 may be unfastened and the garment removed.
