Description

April l0, 1945. I H. PECKER BUTToNHoLE STRIP Filed-Oct. 27, 1942 Patented Apr. 10, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BUTTONHOLE STRIP Harry Pecker, Swampscott, Mass.
Application October 27, 1942, Serial No. 463,535 2 claims. (cl. 2-26'@ The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in buttonhole strips for Various purposes', and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an articleof this character wherein the buttonholes will be concealed from view at all times.
Another very important-object of the invention is to provide a buttonhole strip of the `aforer'nentioned character comprising a construction and .arrangement which is such that lthebu'ttonholes Will not ravel, become distorted or :tear out, 'and wherein the usual thread around the edges is omitted. I l n Other objects of the invention are to provide a buttonhole strip of 'the character described which will Ibe comparatively simple in construction, attractive in appearance, and which may be man- ,ufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing `and still further objects and advantages of the invention will becomeap- @parent from a study of the following specification,
taken in connection -with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is aview in front elevation of a but- Atonhole strip constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the buttons engaged therein.
Figure'Z is a View in front elevation of the button strip.
Figure 3 is a view partially in front elevation and partially in vertical section of the buttonholev strip. l
Figure 4 is a View in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring now `to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a double ply bias cut inner strip l of suitable flexible mate` The longitudinal marginal portions of the folds 4 of the outer strips 3 are turned inwardly in a manner to provide hems or the like 5 and stitched, as at v6, to the inner stripv l, thereby providing finished edges which abut over the buttonholes 2. This yisillustrated to advantage in Figure 5 of the drawing. The folds 4 of the outer stripsB are stitched together, as at 1, adjacent the fold lines of said outer strips.
Suitable buttons, mounted on the strip 8, are indicated at 9. The buttons 9 are inserted through the holesZbetWeen the opposed edges of the outer strips 3. It will kbe noted that the stitches 6 are spaced outwardly from the holes 2v thereby leaving the longitudinal marginal portions of the folds 4 free in a manner to provide what may be considered flexible flaps which eX- tend to points adjacent the holes 2 but which permit the buttons 9 to be readily inserted.
It is believed that the many advantages of a buttonhole strip constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the article is as illustrated and described, v.it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resortedl to which will fall within the scope ofthe invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: y l. A buttonhole strip comprising an inner strip, said strip being folded along its longitudinal center to provide a double thickness and formed with buttonholes spaced from each 'other longitudinally of the strip, outer strips of flexiblematerial folded longitudinally on themselves to form inner and outer foldsintegrally united along their outer side edges, said -outer strips enclosing the inner strip, inner side edge portions of the lfolds of the outer strips being folded toform inturned hems along their longitudinal edges, stitches securing outer side edge portions of the folds of the outer stripstogether at points spaced outwardly from the longitudinal side edges of the inner strip, and stitches passing through the hemmed inner side edge portions of the folds of the outer strips and through side edge portions of the yinner' stripfat points in transverse spaced relation lto the holes, the portions of the outer strips between the stitches and theiry inner side `hems of the folds of the outer strips and through the inner strip at opposite sides of the holes and in spaced relation thereto, the longitudinal inner marginal portions of said folds being free and constituting flaps meeting in edge-to-edge engagement with each other and concealing the HARRY PECKER' holes.'
