Description
Patented Aug. 8,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BAG William A.. Lurie, New Orleans, La. Application July 22, 1942, Serial No. 451,934 3 Claims. (Cl. 229-66) My invention relates to bags and more particularly to bags provided with spouts.
An objector my invention is to provide a bag with a spout which can be made with existing bag machines and in accordance with well known prior art practice in bag making.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bag with a spout which may be tucked into the bottom of the bag when not in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bag with a spout formed in its bottom adapted to be tucked into the bottom when not in'use with the addition of a shielding member for covering the spout when tucked in place.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bag with a foldable spout in its bottom and a re- .end in the same manner as other bags are filled.
After my bag is filled, however, the mouth is permanently closed by having the mouth folded and stitched together or sealed by means of glue or any other known method for closing bags in common practice.
After the -contents have been sealed in my bag, the contents are emptied through the bottom of the bag by means of a spout formation formed therein.
My bag may be made out of any materials suitable for making bags, such as paper, "Cellophane, stiffened cloth, and many other mat rials. Without limiting my invention as to the material out of which it is made, but merely for the purpose of illustrating an application of my invention, I am including in my disclosure of my invention drawing of a paperbag embodying my invention.
I show my bag in the drawing in an upsidedown position to better illustrate the spout feature of my bag constituting my invention. Before proceeding with a detailed description of my bag illustrated in my drawing, I want to point out:
' upon its bottom as well as on the sealed end.
In the drawing: 5 Figure 1 is a plan view of the bottom of my bag. v
Figure 2 is a plan view of one of the members forming the bottom of my bag.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of my bag showingd a step in the opening of the bottom of my bag. an
Figure/i is a perspectiveview of my bag showing the final step of opening the spout in the bottom of my bag.
Referring to the drawing: Numeral l designates the main body portion of my bag. Nu-
meral 2 designates the closed mouth end of my bag shown here closed bystitches 3. Numeral 4 designates generally the bottom of my bag.
Numeral 5 designates a reinforcing plate applied in theconstruction of my bag as an additional member varying from the prior art practice. This reinforcing plate 5 is best seen in Figure l and Figure 2. Figure 1 shows the exposed side of the reinforcing plate 5 as it would appear when looking'at the bottom of one of my bags before it was put into use. Numeral B designates a line of perforations along which the spout shielding flap 1, a removable portion of the reinforcing plate 5 may be dissevered from the reinforcing plate 5. In Figure 2 the reverse side of the reinforcing plate 5 is shown. Numeral 8 designates an adhesive zone on the under side of plate 5, in a position encircling the line of perforations 6 along which the shielding flap l is torn from the plate 5. The reinforcing plate 5 is also provided with a sealing patch 9 which is attached to the adhesive zone 8. The sealing patch 9 is made slightly larger than the non-adhesive area of the plate 5 enclosed or surrounded by the adhesive zone 8, so that the peripheral edge of the patch 9 is stuck to the plate 5. This sealing patch 9 is provided for the purpose of preventing any of the contents of the bag from sifting through the line of perforations and to prevent dirt and even air from getting into'the sealed bag before the spout III, to be described later, has been opened up. This sealing patch 9 is purposely made out of thin paper material so that it is easily torn away after the spout shielding flap 1 has been dissevered from the reinforcing plate 5.
The reinforcing plate 5 by virtue of the encircling adhesive zone-"8 not only adds strength to the bottom of the bag generally, but also reinforces the spout member In of my bag at its base portion where it receives the most wear. It is along the base portion of the spout that it is repeatedly bent in its use. The adhesive zone 8 serves yet another function in that it constrains the base of the spiut in into a generally semitubular shape when the spout it is open determining the shape of the entire spout.
The spout IQ of my bag consists in the nnal closing flap ot a paper has made according to well known practice. The only diil'erence in the spout Ill 01' my bag and the final closing flap of prior art bass is that I leave of! the adhesive employed in prior art practice to hold the final flap down. when part of the contents oi my bad i has been emptied out of the spout Iii, the spout .is folded back on itself on its creasing lines ill the same as any closing flap is folded in. The tip I! of the sp ut lil is then tucked back underneath the reinforcing plate 6 into the tucking space l3 allowed for purpose. when the spout i0 is folded over and tucked in as stated above, the bottom of the bag is closed suihciently' tight to retain the contents of the has even when the bag is held with its bottom down, a reversed position from the position it is illustrated in the drawing. The shielding flap i is useful in my invention in preventing the spout iii from becomin its folded position, said reinforcing plate being provided with a ring shaped adhesive zone on its under side in position to encircle the spout, said-reinforcing plate being provided with a line of rperiorations inside of the adhesive zone by means of which an opening may be made through the reinforcing plate to permit the opening of the spout and a sealing patch attached to the under side of the reinforcing plate in a position to underlie the line of perforations and cover the spout.
2. A bag including a bottom, said bottom ineluding a foldabie spout, a reinforcing plate attached to the bottom over the foldable spout in its folded position, said reinforcing plate being provided with a line of perforations located at its center by which an opening for the spout to extend may be made, said reinforcing plate bein provided with a ring shaped adhesive zone on its under side, a base portion of the spout being stuck to the under side of' the reinforcing plate along its adhesive zone whereby the peripheral portion of the plate to which the spout is stuck serves as a reinforcing member for the base portion of the spout.
3. The bag as claimed in claim 2. wherein the line of perforations is positioned inwardly of the inner edge portion of the adhesive zone adjacent to the tip of the spout in folded position and inwardly of the tip of the spout whereby a pocket is formed between the reinforcing plate and the bottom of the bag for the reception of the tip of the spout when in folded position.
