Application September 23, 1940, Serial No. 357,975
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an undergarment for women, the general object of the invention being to make the garment from cheap material so that it can be thrown away after use, with an absorbing pad attached to the crotch part of the garment.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the garment is formed.
Figure 2 is a front view of the garment after the blank has been folded.
Figure 3 is a view of the absorbent pad.
Figure 4 is a front view of the complete garment.
Figure 5 is a section on ure 4.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure '7 is a detail view showing how the hem at the top of the garment is formed by an elastic thread.
In these views the letter A indicates the blank from which the garment is formed and the letter B indicates the absorbent pad used with the garment. The garment is formed of gauze material and the blank includes the central portion l and the two end portions 2 and an upwardly tapering notch 3 is formed in the lower end of each section. The sections 2 are folded upon the section I and the end portions of the sections 2 overlap so that the front of the garment is of double thickness as shown at 4 and the blank is so folded that the three notches come into register as shown in Figure 2. By overlapping the end portions of the sections 2 and sewing each end edge to a portion of the garment two points of connection of the ends of the blank with the front portion of the garment are provided and this, of course, makes the central front portion of double thickness with each thickness having a notch 3 in its lower end so that the front of the pad is sewn to the lower end of this front part of the garment which is of double thickness. Thus the overlapping feature reinforces the garment.
The pad B has its central portion made wide as shown at 5 with the pad gradually decreasing in width to its ends with the side edges slightly curving from the wide part to the ends. The pad is formed of a covering of gauze with absorbent material between the layers of gauze as shown in Figure 5.
the line 5-5 of Fig- The side edges of the pad are sewn to the front and rear notches, to the side walls thereof so that this pad connects the front and rear portions together at the bottom of the garment with its ends free to form inner portions of the legs L of the garment as shown more clearly in Figure 4.
A hem H is formed at the topof the garment and the hem is stitched by an elastic thread 1 and thus the top of the garment will fit snugly around the waist of the user. This hem is simply formed by turning over a part of the material at the top of the garment and then sewing the turned over part to the adjacent part of the garment by the elastic thread 1. Of course the elastic thread acts to pucker the material at the hem as shown in Figs. 4 and '7. The lower ends of the blank are hemmed at H at the time the pad extending under the crotch is sewed to the blank with its side edges extending up over lower portions of the front and rear parts of the garment and the ends of the pad forming portions of the leg openings. Thus when the garment is pulled snugly over the hips of the user the pad will fit snugly the crotch.
As before stated all portions of the garment are made of inexpensive material and the garment itself can be manufactured to sell at low cost, so that it can be thrown away after being used once.
Of course, the garments are made of different sizes to fit different sized persons.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, as new is:
The herein described method of forming a womans disposable garment consisting in providing a rectangular sheet of gauze, forming notches in the lower edge of the sheet, one at the central portion thereof and one adjacent each end thereof, folding the end sections of the sheet over the middle section with the ends of the sheet overlapping and connected together, with said notches registering when the sheet is folded, providing an absorbent pad having its central portion of greater width than its end portions and then placing the side edges of the pad in the notches and sewing the said side edges of the pad to the walls of the notches to make the pad form the crotch part of the garment with the ends of the pad forming portions of the legs of the garment,
what is claimed GLADYS B. WHITE.
