Description

ul 21,1942. J.OLEYAR 2,290,445
SPUR I Filed July 25, 1941 Inventor Attorney Patented July 21', 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in spurs, the principal object in view being to provide a simply constructed device of this character for attachment to a boot and for use either as riding or dancing equipment.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description and defined in the claim appended hereto.
In said drawing Figure 1 is a view in plan of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view partly in plan and partly in section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the spur of my invention includes a substantially horse shoe-shaped yoke l of any suitable material constructed and arranged to fit forwardly over the heel portion of the upper of a boot, not shown. A pair of fastening pins 2 are suitably fixed in the front end portions of the yoke l to extend inwardly thereof and for extension through the boot upper and clinching on the inside of said upper. A strap-like attaching member 3 is suitably secured at one end thereof to the rear portion of the yoke I to extend upwardly from the inner face thereof against the back of the boot, said member having a pin 4 therein also for extension through the upper of the boot and clinching against the inside of the same.
The rear portion of the yoke I is equipped with a rearwardly extending lug 5 having a threaded bore 6 therein. A forked rowel holder 1 is provided for attachment to said lug 5, said holder having a threaded shank 8 for turning into the bore 6. The shank 8 is so arranged that when turned home the holder 1 has the furcations thereof disposed in the plane of the yoke I. A pin I0 extends through the free ends of the rowel holder 1, and rotatably mounted on said pin in concentric, laterally spaced relation, is a plurality of star wheels, or rowels, H. The wheels H are loose on the pin l0 so as to rattle under Vibration and for a purpose presently described.
The described spurs are designed to be made in pairs of right and left units, and the lug 5 and rowel holder 1, also the wheels, or rowels, H, are inclined so as to extend outwardly and rearwardly away from the flank of a horse so that a rider may ride Without turning toes inwardly to keep the wheels H away from the horses flanks. In the drawing, a right unit spur has been shown by way of illustration. The star wheels, or rowels, II are designed tobe used to function as castanets so that the spur may be utilized as dancing equipment in folk dancing and the like.
As will be understood, the rowel holder 1 is readily detachable for replacement purposes.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is:
A spur comprising a horse shoe-shaped yoke for straddling the heel portion of a boot, means on said yoke for permanently attaching the same to the boot, a rowel holder extending from the rear of said yoke toward one side thereof to avoid contact with the flank of a horse, and a plurality of star wheels mounted in said holder side by side for rotation thereon and for relative vibratory movement laterally to function as castanets in dancing, said means comprising pins on said yoke adapted to be extended through said boot, and a rigid upstanding strap on said yoke having a fastener thereon adapted to be secured to said boot,
JOHN OLEYAR.
